#TMM9
Having recently completed its 9th season, The Mid-Majority is a community chronicle of the smaller Division I college basketball conferences. Last year, the theme was Team. Six groups of five (plus a fantasy mid-major player) were engaged in friendly Amazing Race-style competition, criss-crossing Hoops Nation to provide awesome college basketball content. Season X (2013-14) will be our final one.

S9 March 15, 2013 Thursday's initial opening round game between #8 seed Richmond and #9 seed Charlotte seemed to be a fairly routine clash of styles. In the basketball equivalence of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sprat, Richmond would take no inside shots, and Charlotte would take none from outside. Richmond knocked down fou...
S9 January 25, 2013 It's hard not to become a rival with a school that is a mere ten or fifteen minutes away and its certainly something the University of Richmond and VCU haven't avoided. The two schools are nine miles apart but couldn't be more different. While Richmond has a picturesque suburban campus with just ov...
S9 January 21, 2013 People seem to forget that Charlotte is in the Atlantic 10. While most of the conferences power is in the northeast, Charlotte sits in the south quietly going about their business. I became familiar with Charlotte (or UNC Charlotte back in the day) as a kid because they matched up annually with VCU...
S9 January 3, 2013 When Chris Mooney came to the University of Richmond in 2005 I wasn't quite sure what to think. Mooney was replacing the ever popular Jerry Wainwright who was highly successful at UNCW and then took the Spiders to two postseason births in his three year tenure. Mooney and Wainwright couldn't be mor...
S9 December 30, 2012 Richmond, Virginia has grown into a sort of hub for mid-major basketball. You have solid programs in VCU and the University of Richmond, and the CAA tournament is held in town annually (not for long though). But this year it seems as if there has been an influx of quality programs visiting town. VC...
S9 December 24, 2012 One of the cool things about living in Virginia is the number of quality and unique college basketball programs. You have schools ranging from the ACC all the way down to one of the best programs in DIII hoops (Virginia Wesleyan). As a Division I fan its upsetting that some of the best in the state...
S9 December 3, 2012 Game #9-117: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Richmond SpidersDecember 1, 2012 6:00 pmRobins CenterBBState Stats/Recap Timing was working out well for my first MidMajority doubleheader. I left Farmville just before 4 o'clock and I'd have just enough time to grab a beer with my dad at a local bar by Univ...
S9 November 21, 2012 Game #9-063: Wofford Terriers at Richmond SpidersNovember 20, 2012 7:00 pmRobins CenterBBState Stats/Recap I decided to head to what I like to call the "City Morgue" tonight to catch Richmond taking on Wofford. I certainly wasn't expecting much, the Spiders were coming off a loss to Minnesota but th...
S9 November 11, 2012 Game #9-004: Liberty Flames at Richmond SpidersNovember 9, 2012 7:00 pmRobins CenterBBState Stats/Recap "What’s our score? DOUBLE YOURS"... That was a cheer we used to shout during high school basketball games. Usually it was used in the first half when you might find your school up twenty-four to t...
S8 January 3, 2012 Game #8-338: Liberty Flames at Richmond SpidersDecember 28, 2011 7:00 pmRobins CenterBBState Stats/RecapI’m going to be honest: I’m kind of a crotchety old man when it comes to my sporting events. I’m a diva when it comes to seat location: as close to center court as possible, be it in the upper or ...
S6 April 5, 2010 INDIANAPOLIS -- At this point, there really isn't anything that hasn't been said. You know 1 Samuel 17:49, and you've heard the one about brick walls, and you know everything that's at stake tonight. Nothing less than the National Flippin' Championship, and one of our own is playing for it. All of...
S6 March 26, 2010 Down 68-65 with 1:16 left in regulation of a second round NCAA game at Providence's Dunkin' Donuts Center, Villanova called time out. We'll never really know exactly what was drawn up in that huddle, but what emerged was a play that only a team full of McDonald's All-Americans could ever execute. ...
S6 March 19, 2010 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- I have a bobblehead doll of Bryce Drew releasing The Shot that beat Ole Miss in 1998, and a picture on my wall of Northwestern State's Jermaine Wallace uncorking the three-pointer that eliminated Iowa in 2006. I'll admit that I have to think for a minute to remember the names o...
S6 March 15, 2010 INDIANAPOLIS -- We pause to repect the accomplishments of Utah State, Richmond and Xavier. Heck, even Gonzaga. And even though we don't draw the line between power conferences and "none of the above" the same way as the people on TV, there were some other schools that don't play in the Premier Leagu...
S6 March 14, 2010 Bullet Points Seven championships were decided on the penultimate day of Championship Fortnight. All hail Vermont, back in the Dance for the first time since 2005 (Season 1) and also for the first time in the Mike Lonergan era. Congratulations to Morgan State; the Bears navigated the always-difficu...
S6 March 10, 2010 One makes for a one-off, but two constitutes a tradition. It's now unthinkable to end Season 6 without having our friends from Storming The Floor over during Championship Fortnight, to discuss one of the most hallowed of all college basketball rituals: the taking of the court. Our First Annual Flo...
S6 March 8, 2010 PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- This is the last week we'll all be together, before the 23 Champions of Hoops Nation (and a few others) move on to the fourth and final round -- leaving everyone else to figure out what comes next. It's a bittersweet final few days, full of joy and anguish, ultimate wins and ter...

S6 March 3, 2010 PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- It's 2010, and the future is now. We have androids and robots that do our bidding, we use magic phones, and all the kids are having droid sex on "virtual AOL." Everything either flies, glows, or has a touch screen. But there's one machine from the old-school that has not been ou...

S6 February 11, 2010 The State of College Basketball is a ratings system that uses a lot of good basketball sense, per-game team performance ratings and degradation of older results to rank the teams from No. 1 to 344 (here's the long-winded version). In its overall form, it retroactively picked three of the Final Four ...

S6 February 3, 2010 I'll never forget Christmas 1987. The anticipation made my little underdeveloped heart jackrabbit in its bony cage. I recall bounding down the old toasty staircase, pushing my little sister aside, my eyes wide as canned hams. And there, 'neath the tinsel-topped tree, was the box I'd longed for so ...
S4 February 21, 2008 JACKSONVILLE -- Lots and lots to get to today with a full slate of red-hot mid-major action, but first I wanted to pimp n' plug tomorrow's Gigantic BracketBusters Marathon Chat on ESPN.com. There are always hundreds of people who don't get their questions attended to during the regular Wednesday dea...
S4 February 7, 2008 CLEVELAND -- There are a lot of subtle differences between higher-strata conferences and the leagues at our level. For instance, when a team in the ACC or Pac 10 is having a bad year, the media is still going to write about it, no matter what. The stories usually come with the angle of, "what's goin...
S4 January 4, 2008 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- I attended my first-ever Summit League game last night. Oh sure, I've been to plenty of Mid-Continent Conference games before, but things are different now. They've got a new name, new colors, and a new clip-art logo. Are their feelings of inadequacy solved? Hope so! Folks fro...
