Bullet Points

  • All four Patriot League quarters were decided by three points or less, and the round featured two upsets as No. 7 Bucknell and No. 5 Army advanced. Bucknell beat No. 2 Navy 87-86 on a John Griffin 40-foot buzzer-beater in triple overtime.
  • In the Sun Belt, the campus-site first round produced a 12-over-5 upset, as Troy won at Louisiana-Lafayette.
  • Atlantic Sun top seeds Belmont and Jacksonville advanced to Friday's semifinal round.
  • Two tourneys get under way tonight: the Missouri Valley holds its first round in St. Louis, while the Northeast Conference quarterfinals get going at campus sites.

Patriot League

Bucknell was down by 17 before staging a comeback, then held on for three OT's before Griffin's prayer iced the upset. Army and Lehigh went one extra frame, and the No. 5 Black Knights prevailed. American survived the defending champions with a three-point play with 17 seconds left. Colgate built a big lead before a furious Leopard rally nearly forced a third upset of the night.

In the first day of quarterfinals, the top two seeds didn't exactly cruise, but they did enough to advance. Belmont and Jacksonville will now get a day off while the other two quarters play out (see below).

Sun Belt

Troy outscored ULL 44-25 in the second half to bring Lafayette's season to an unexpected halt. Incidentally, Troy's women's team won an 11-over-6 road game at Louisiana-Monroe on the same night. The other four first-round games went as planned, and the Belt has now been tightened to an elite eight which will reconvene Sunday in Mobile.

Big South

BSOUTH0306.jpg

There's a bit of intrigue in tonight's semis, as both season series ended in splits. High Point's fans stormed the court in a regular season-opening win over defending champion Winthrop, and Asheville was throttled in its last meeting at No. 4 seeded Liberty.

Missouri Valley

VALLEY0306.jpg

It's the Valley's grand tradition of "Pillowfight Friday Thursday" (moved up a day since CBS opened a Sunday timeslot for the final), as the bottom four seeds battle it out for a chance to play either top seed Drake or No. 2 Illinois State tomorrow.
