Plenty of great games available this weekend, but the Game! Of! The! Weekend! happens at Koch Arena where Indiana State visits Wichita State on Saturday afternoon.
Indiana State is having an incredible season, but #TreeFever has been somewhat overshadowed by the dominance of Wichita State in the conference. The Sycamores have the Missouri Valley's second best offense and defense and are absurdly chock full of good shooters. ISU shoots over 50-percent from the field and an incredible 48-percent from #superhoop range. If the Sycamores get hot they can stay with any team in the country.
Wichita State, yo may have heard, is playing pretty good basketball. The Shockers last lost to Louisville in the Final Four last season and have only had a handful of close calls this season. The national media conversation around Wichita will follow like this for the rest of the season: there will be questions if the team can run the table and finish the regular season undefeated (Sagarin gives this about a 11-percent chance of happening). If/when the Shockers do finally lose a game, they will be forgotten nationally, their likely 30-win season will be written off as a product of an easy schedule, despite ranking 74th in non-conference SOS by the metrics the NCAA Selection Committee uses.
For this websites purposes the Shockers will be our best chance of another Final Four team and ending the season with a win. Mile High Mids has outlined this
in pretty good detail, so I'll add this to the conversation. The joy is in the journey, not in the destination. We all hope that the Shockers are that team of destiny, the one that can send this website out like it deserves, but until March comes thinking about NCAA Tournament draws and chances devalues the fun of the games that are in front of us. The Shockers might walk through the rest of the Valley or they might lose on Saturday afternoon. Neither outcome changes that the Shockers are a fantastic team that reminds us how great basketball can be.
So when you tune into ESPN for the Game! Of! The! Weekend! I encourage you to enjoy the game, enjoy the journey and not worry about the future.
Fate is unstoppable. Appreciate the basketball.
