Game #9-293: Saint Peter`s Peacocks at Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds

Reitz Arena
BBState Stats/Recap

The start of conference play is something that always gets me excited. Out are the guarantee games and games against Black Line schools, and in are games against your conference rivals that determine your seeding in the conference tournament. Every game suddenly has a new meaning. In the MAAC, this was actually the second weekend of conference play, as each team played two conference games in November. For Loyola and St. Peter's the champions of the league the last two years, this was their second meeting this season, as the Greyhounds had won a game played at the Izod Center earlier this season. It felt weird to think that this, the first weekend in January would be the second meeting between these two teams, but such was the case.

One of the first challenges of the day was finding Reitz Arena. While I usually don't get lost very easily, I had a little trouble finding the gym. I eventually found my way into the arena doors, but then had to find the ticket window. Going down a back stairway eventually led me to the ticket office, and I purchased my ticket, and made my way back to the arena, missing the first couple of minutes of the game. When I got there, I noticed the arena was fairly empty (something I attributed to the Baltimore Ravens playoff game happening about eight miles south of the arena). While there were a few groups there, it seemed like a lot of the fans that were there were friends and family of both the men's and women's teams, as this was a double-header.

I had planned to attend a game at Loyola to see Coach Jimmy Patsos, but when I glanced at the Greyhound bench, I noticed that he wasn't there. I don't know why he missed the game, but his top assistant G.G. Smith was taking over the coaching duties for the game. The score was 7-3 Greyhounds when I arrived, and a 7-0 run for Loyola extended the lead to 11. It reached as high as 15 points in the first half, and the Greyhounds went into the locker room with a 13-point lead.

In the second half, the Greyhounds continued to extend their lead. Yvon Raymond scored the first points of the second half for the Peacocks, but the Greyhounds responded, building the lead to 18 points after a #superhoop by Anthony Winbush. Despite the deficit, Peacock coach John Dunne refused to let his team quit. He stayed on them to continue to press, and to hustle back on defense. While staying on his team, it was easy to tell that he was getting frustrated with his team. On several occasions, he looked at his assistants as if he was ready to get up and leave, and on many others, he simply buried his face into his hands. He tried different combinations of players, but nothing worked. The final margin was 74-58 Greyhounds. For Dunne and the Peacocks, it was back to the drawing board to try to figure out a way to get back to their ultimate goal, a conference championship.
