BBState Stats/Recap

Game five started and the first thing I could think of is it looked like the game should have been presented by 7up. In some strange uniform selection process, both teams came out in single color uniforms. The Florida A&M Rattlers were wearing green while the Coppin State Eagles wore yellow with a small amount of blue trim. I immediately texted my wife that this game would be referred to as the lemon-lime game.

The first few minutes of the game were a see-saw affair that saw both teams gain small two-point leads. Once the nerves settled down, the lemons took control of the game with aggressive play. The lemons took a 15 point lead to the locker room, up 43-28.

Unfortunately for the lemons, they came out flatter than a month old open bottle of 7up, allowing the limes to score 13 straight points and immediately get within striking distance with the score 43-41.

The last 15 minutes of the game seemed to drag along. Maybe it was because of my basketball overload for the day and maybe it was because the play really was that bad. Either way, scoring was happening, but it was coming in spurts between choppy play.

There was a point where neither team scored during a stretch of over five minutes of game time. As the game wore down, the limes finally went on a scoring spree with an 11-3 run to take a 70-68 lead with 1:02 left to play. The lemons answered with a 3-pointer, but Yannick Crowder hit a shot to put the limes back up 72-71 with 28 seconds left.

At this point I was convinced that this game was going to go to overtime just to torture me.

However a bad possession by lemons forced them to foul and send the limes to the line. The limes hit both free throws for a 74-71 lead, but the drama wasn't over yet.

The lemons came down and ran a bad play, but somehow managed to double clutch and get fouled while shooting a 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left to play. (photos below)

Now I knew the game was going to overtime and I slumped back into my seat.

Then the unthinkable happened. The lemons missed the first free throw! They regained their composure and hit the second. Now it was down to the final shot, which they needed to miss on purpose, but get a tip-in to tie the game. The shot came. It perfectly missed and went right to a lemon. The tip was up and off the fingers in time. The ball hung in the air for what seemed like forever. (photos below)

Luckily for me, it was off the mark and I was scrambling to gather my stuff and begin the eight hour journey home to central PA. After all, I did skip out on my wedding anniversary on my wife who is due any day to make this trip. I needed to get home.

That haste quickly caught up with me as I got pulled over less than five minutes after leaving the coliseum. Thankfully the cop let me off after running my license in the system and I was on my way home.

I slept a few hours at a rest stop just inside of Virginia but nothing else exciting happened. I got home in time to accompany my wife to the doctor's and find out that Colton James is going to come late.
