Sincere apologies to the estate of Ernest Lawrence Thayer and people who appreciate proper meter and rhymes:
The outlook seemed poor for the Aggies that night A double-digit defeat would appear the newest blight 'pon a record of one win and 13 defeats. A turnover by Corbin led to more empty seats.
Few left but the remainder that stayed Knew 15 minutes were left to be played. Soon after the Band-uh! embracedthe lack of snow, the Aggie sharpshooters put on their own show.
Players like Tyler Les, the coach's son, Showed both crowd and Pop he could get it done. Hitting three superhoops must have looked like fun as Josh Ritchart decided to contribute one.
As the Highlander lead slowly dwindled, Energy from the crowd began to be kindled. For each superhoop made, the crowd shouted with glee Since a staffer would throw to each side a Tee.
The combined Aggie effort removed fear and doubt Because the score was tied at the second media timeout. Throughout, cheerleaders and marketers stoked crowd gladness Through media timeouts offering bead, candy and tube sock madness
Missed free throws and shots bouncing off the rim with a sound Allowed the Highlanders of Riverside to stick around. During UCR free throws, the Band-uh tried to help the Ags keep pace By distracting them with among other images, young Will Smith's face.
With five seconds to go, Riverside was up two And Davis' Eddie Miller knew what to do. He drove to the hoop but the crowd was appalled; A jersey grab by Phil Martin was not called!
The Highlanders had a foul to give But the official decided to live and let live. Miller with a motion not so sweet Tied the game, which brought the crowd to its feet!
And lo! The Aggie fans did cheer For they knew overtime would be near. Somewhere in the Little Tomato Several students would plan to get blotto.
However, a striped man on the student side stood large And with a gesture of his arms motioned "Charge!" When Miller planned to drive, Elliot Berry planted himself and mentally laughed As he saw Miller's drive as telegraphed.
However upon the black arc under the rim Some claimed to see Berry's heels touch, but a reversal was slim. The Band-uh! often as happy as a clam Offered their ruling: "this game is a sham!"
Miller fouled Kareen Nitoto with three ticks left; After a timeout by Davis, the net Nitoto's shot was bereft Two seconds remained and the Ags had one last chance But after getting the rebound, the striped man said Ritchart appeared to dance.
After the buzzer sounded fans had witnessed a stumble But all were treated to something rather humble. The Alma Mater played and the Aggies stood together; Proof Our Game is often more than manipulation of leather.
Davis, like Mudville, knew the pains of heartbreak But the faith and pep of the Band-uh! the loss did not shake. A famous Kansas tune upon a firetruck they did play Providing a soundtrack for homeward travelers on their way.
Walking to the car with alumnus sibling in tow I ruminated on the completed show. Both sides made enough errors and runs to make the result fair; Turnovers and poor shots removed the effect of Davis' superhoop tear.
I enjoyed my visit to the ARC Pleased the students and Band-uh! helped provide a needed spark. Through my head, thoughts of "what if?" I did toss But one thought won out: "It ends in a loss."
