Rick Pitino, full-court pressure, 11 steals and 22 forced turnovers.
Sounds a lot like a typical Louisville game.
However, Pitino was the only Cardinal at Draddy Gymnasium on Monday night.
With his nationally ranked squad set to battle St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, the legendary head coach had an opportunity to watch his protégé vie for win number 10 of his rookie season at the helm of Manhattan College.
Unfortunately for Steve Masiello -- who has welcomed the term "mid-major Louisville" as a definition of his team -- the high-pressure defense he adopted from Pitino wasn't flawless. Anytime a coach implements a full-court press, he risks allowing open jump shots if the opponent doesn't turn the ball over.
Manhattan forced 22 turnovers. However, it also allowed Rider 22 open looks from beyond the arc, and the Broncs converted on 12 of them en route to an 88-77 victory.
The Broncs, who hit four of their first five treys, took a 52-35 lead into the locker room and were up 24 points with 12 minutes remaining. Then the Manhattan defense cracked down, forcing 11 turnovers that led to 15 points down the stretch.
Kidani Brutus found his shooting groove and buried three treys, and the Jaspers as a team converted 6 of 11 three-pointers over the final 12 minutes to cut Rider's lead to seven with 1:30 left on the clock.
Manhattan is a relatively inexperienced team, and its youth was exposed in the final 90 seconds. First, freshman Emmy Andujar missed a layup off a turnover with 51 seconds left. After the ensuing intentional foul, Rider's Daniel Stewart missed the front end of a one-and-one, so the Jaspers still trailed by seven. However, Liam McCabe-Moran, a senior walk-on who played 30 minutes all of last season, promptly committed a backcourt violation.
With good reason, a bulk of the 1,234 fans in attendance subsequently filed for the exit.
One notable fan waited until the final buzzer, though. Pitino, oh that loyal Rick Pitino, stuck around to join Masiello and the Jaspers in the locker room.
The loss dropped the Jaspers to 9-6, but the fact that Masiello had a shot at win number 10 this early in the season is a positive sign for Manhattan fans, who saw their team "earn" just six victories under Barry Rohrssen last season.
This team is headed in the right direction. In addition to the higher quality of basketball, Draddy Gym now has two video screens, which played an introductory pregame video like many BCS schools.
Mid-major Louisville, indeed.
