Bracket WrapBig South:
The way is now even clearer for the dominant one-seed in this league; after the campus-seed quarterfinals, the BSC bracket is blown apart.(7) Charleston Southern 66, (2) Liberty 60 (story)(6) High Point 98, (3) North Carolina-Asheville 93 (OT) (story)(4) Birmingham-Southern 69, (5) Radford 40 (story)(1) Winthrop 74, (8) Coastal Carolina 62 (story)
Winthrop (25-5, 16-1 BSC, 16 straight W) stepped on the gas just once, a 16-3 run late in the game to put the Chanticleers' season to bed - former MMBOW Torrell Martin
, recently named to the All-Conference team, had 10 points. But the first tourney upsets of the year were recorded here: High Point took out UNCA for the third time in four seasons after a wild shootout in which they outscored the Bulldogs ten to five in OT; seven-seed Charleston Southern stormed back from 10 points down midway through the second half to douse the Flames, who finish their season with a 13-15 record. The only easy game was the four over the five, which featured the lowest one-team point total in this tournament's history - Radford shot just 21% from the floor.
The Big South semifinals will be held on Thursday night. No reseeding in this tourney, so Winthrop will host 4 Birmingham Southern (16-13, 8-9 BSC), while the upstart 6 and 7 winners will square off at High Point.Ohio Valley:
The OVC tournament had two first-round upsets for the first time in the last nine years.(6) Southeast Missouri 61, Murray State 58 (story)(5) Austin Peay 71, (4) Samford 60 (story)(2) Eastern Kentucky 74, Tennessee State 68 (story)(1) Tennessee Tech 72, (8) Eastern Illinois 68 (story)
Top-seeded TTU (18-10, 13-4 OVC) needed to come back from a 10-point halftime deficit to advance against Eastern Illinois, and 2 EKU dug themselves out of a seven-point hole at the break of their game. The two other top seeds didn't have such good luck. Austin Peay scored the mini-upset in the 4-5 game on Samford's home floor in a nip-and-tuck affair; Murray could not muster a comeback against a SEMO team that had dropped three of four (including a 61-57 drop to these same Racers) after a surprising seven-game win streak.
No reseeding as we move to Nashville for the concluding chapters of the OVC tourney. On Friday at 6:30 Eastern, Tennessee Tech will play Austin Peay, and Eastern Kentucky versus Southeast Missouri will be the late game. What's On TapSouthern:
The SoCon festivities begin today in Chattanooga with four cross-division qualification games that will determine who gets to play the ones and twos in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Seeds S5 Wofford
, S3 Georgia Southern
, S4 Furman
and N3 Appalachian State
should prevail nicely, due to their superior records and the fact that all four have beaten today's opponents during the regular season. The ETSU-Furman game will be notable because it will likely mark the end of what had promised to be a strong title defense by the Buccaneers (9-18, 4-12 SoCon); Tim Smith
, the 5'9" Buc junior guard, had to shoulder too much of the burden this year and fought off a jinx from a preseason Sports Illustrated
