[9] Dayton Flyers vs. [3] Richmond Spiders

Atlantic City, NJ
BBState Stats/Recap

After ten days, six leagues, 21 games, over 2,000 miles and two all-night drives, Championship Fortnight is at an end for us. It all culminates in the Atlantic 14 title game, and Spider destiny. Butt thieves, halftime Atlantic City style, why we don't hate Joe Lunardi, cake, rocking the all-tourney team vote, and a photo gallery of the happy winners. Plus, Selection Sunday with BLAPP.

And finally, our annual serenade for the winner.

@midmajority Game Tweets

13:01 Al Shrier let us move up to the front row. I think it's because he likes my silver bowtie. #bonus
13:02 RT @atlantic10: 5 minutes away from tip off of the Final game of the 2011 A-10 MBB Championship- Dayton vs. Richmond- be sure to watch it on CBS!
13:06 Richmond getting introduced. Second straight final appearance for the Spiders. http://t.co/WmsUhn4
13:06 RT @ursinussid: @pretzel_logic @midmajority I was wondering who was rocking the bowtie.
13:08 Tip. http://t.co/kRmyDcj
13:10 Richmond's Dan Geriot and Dayton's Chris Johnson trade #superhoops, and we're fully underway. 3-3.
13:16 Dayton went 22-12, 7-9 in the A-14, got here the very very hard way. Beat UMass on the road, top seed X the other day, SJU yesterday.
13:17 Richmond went 26-7 overall, 13-3 in the league, and beat Rhode Island and Temple to make the final. Looked sluggish Fri, inspired Sat.
13:18 #youareinformed. Also: we've done this in the past for title games. You're invited to tweet us your all-tourney team & influence our ballot.
13:19 Yes, we can impact A-14 history. I would like to write in that pretty URI redheaded cheerleader who threw a t-shirt into the upper deck.
13:20 But you can't do that. It's the all-tourney team; only dudes. Richmond leads 14-6 at 12:26 1H. Anderson will be on the ballot, he's got 8.
13:22 It's a special Selection Sunday here in Atlantic City. The national anthem singer was from Kidz Bop. We all got cake.
13:24 And full credit to Richmond/Dayton. No Philly teams left. Both are representing with red, have a 8000-seat place half-full. Good traveling.
13:27 End of the 1st quarter, and Richmond leads 17-12. Dayton must be so frustrating for fans. Too talented/determined to look like a No. 9 seed.
13:32 But a series of Dayton clunks allows the higher seed to push forward. Cedrick Lindsay drops 3 for Richmond, and it's 22-12 Spiders. 7:03 1H.
13:34 The big question: are there enough fans on either side to #stormthecourt #seekthecore #feeltheheat?
13:37 Anderson with another three. And another Dayton empty, leading to a foul and 1/2 Darrius Garrett FT's. 26-14 Richmond, run in progress.
13:39 Richmond achieves a clean dubl-up at 28-14, then adds a one-point throwup to take it higher. UD shooting 33%, 6 turns. 4:02 1H.
13:42 Halfcourt shooting contest. Fat guy airballs it, gets another chance. Airballs it. Another chance. Airballs it. Gets a prize anyway.
13:42 Must be what being a .500 Big East team is like. 29-16 Richmond at 3:15 1H.
13:45 Bandits! A lot of UD's recent passes have been telegraphed like Western Union. Pickoffs and runbacks accumulating. 32-20 Spiders late in 1H.
13:47 On the other end, Richmond teeing up from #superhoopland. Dayton D acknowledging this, mostly in passing. Spiders 8/13 from three so far.
13:48 But a Devin Searcy layup brings the lead back down to 10. Time out, UD fans stand and cheer. Anything good happens: UD fans stand and cheer.
13:49 That's one half of basketball, exactly. 20 minutes or so until the new Atlantic One is crowned. Richmond leads Dayton 34-24.
13:51 Did I mention that we got cake? We did. http://t.co/nN4vRas
13:54 #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [9] Dayton 24 [3] Richmond 34 - Half
13:58 Sometimes, there are no words. Except wow. http://t.co/csTgiii http://t.co/juqF5Hl
14:00 Tempo-free HT, brought to you by BLAPP. Dayton: 24 points, 30 possessions (.80). Richmond: 34 points in 30 trips (1.13). Flyers have 7 TOs.
14:02 This Selection Sunday, select BLAPP. The blend of lager, fruit juice and grain alcohol will expand the at-large pool. Of your vomit. BLAPP.
14:03 Surgeon General's warning: BLAPP will make you die.
14:07 We are back for a second half of championship basketball in Atlantic City.
14:07 RT @jtanHC: @midmajority HT show, also brought by BLAPP('s consumption). Or its side effects.
14:09 In 2 minutes, Dayton has scored five unanswered points. They are playing for a championship, not to be butt thieves or whatever you call it.
14:12 But Anderson releases another one of his picture-perfect threes, and Richmond is up 8. 14 for him. He's on the all-tourney team.
14:13 Just a reminder that we're taking suggestions for our A-14 all-tourney ballot. Extra weight, the Philly media is gone. Media room a desert.
14:14 I ate Jerardi and Tatum's pieces of cake. Another guy who isn't here is Mr. Joe Lunardi. He was here longer than he expected to be.
14:15 While we're MTOing, wanted to clear up a misconception. Just because I hate bracketology and stuff, I have a deep respect for Mr. Lunardi.
14:16 We get along great. Chatted Friday. We're both people who found a niche and milked it, although he became much more successful.
14:17 Lunardi deserves everything that he's gained. He made people look at basketball differently, which is what I've always tried to do. Respect.
14:18 Here in the A-14 Philly-free phinal, Richmond leads Dayton 42-32. Flyers put on a burst, then go flat. Burst, flat. Burst, flat.
14:22 Burst! Paul Williams with a big three, then a high suspension jumper on the next trip. 44-38 Richmond, 11:11 2H.
14:26 This man and his colleagues are playing E.U.'s "Da' Butt." http://t.co/IiAeNiq
14:29 Flat. Richmond bucket, Wright misses a Front end, Kevin Smith +1. End of 3Q, Spiders by 10.
14:31 RT @jllanclos: Best part of March Madness? @midmajority's tempo-free halftime. Brought to you by BLAPP.
14:35 7:56 2H, Richmond maintaining a double-digit lead. 51-41. Buzzer filers preparing their stories. "Richmond Wins First A-10 Title" is one.
14:38 Dayton's Josh Benson appears, from this angle, to pass the ball to the ref. Not your friend. First signs of shoulder slumpage in UD huddle.
14:39 Best seat in the house. http://t.co/nzHrrpY
14:42 Squee! RT @JohnWillmott: @midmajority Very brief network TV Bally sighting!
14:43 Justin Harper is in the process of paving over the manhole cover under which Dayton's last hope is trapped. Six straight pts, 55-45 Spiders.
14:49 Thanks for everyone's help with our all-tourney ballot! Here's ours. http://t.co/F3hzRQ8
14:51 Three minutes left, and Richmond leads 55-45. Would Richmond's students #stormthecourt #seekthecore #feeltheheat if they hold on?
14:52 There, in the corner, pretty much behind the Dayton bench, is the shiny shiny A-14 trophy. Staten sky-layup out of a TO. Motivation.
14:53 RT @FuzzDons: @midmajority Simple. Lunardi watches games with an abacus, you watch it with @ballybasketball. One more enjoyable than other, both useful.
14:54 1:48 left in regulation. A-14 title game. 55-47 Spiders. The full section behind us is on their feet. Don't seem like the storming type.
14:58 1:26, 58-49 RICH. I don't know if we're supposed to be rooting for the butt thieves or not. If we even know who they are. Are we they?
14:58 RT @mrmyers1: @midmajority UNO Mavericks to join Summit. Omaha soon to be a required stop for Whelliston and Bally, Jays v. Mavs.
15:01 We have a lot of catchphrases, but very few credos. Winter pays for summer; March takes care of itself.
15:03 One minute left. Richmond leads by 11. Harper seals the A-14 title with an #omgdunx. And so the relevant portion of UD's season ends.
15:04 Richmond students start a chant: "You've been grounded (clap, clap, clap-clap-clap)." #sportswriting?
15:06 Kevin Anderson comes out, Chris Mooney hugs him. A better chant goes up: "M!V!P!" We're not dense enough not to have put that down.
15:07 RICHMOND IS THE ATLANTIC ONE.
15:08 #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [9] Dayton 54 [3] Richmond 67 - Final
15:09 Kevin Smith is going to Dizz Knee Land. http://t.co/aMoJVLT
15:09 RT @ShadowKazie: If it wasn't for music, college basketball, and @midmajority updates...this Sunday would be meaningless lol.
15:14 Champs. http://t.co/p4ePlvq
15:17 They won that! http://t.co/n8ewAhb
15:18 Teh nets. It's comin' down. http://t.co/Lb8j7Ls
15:19 Spider happies! http://t.co/nJzwjIH
15:20 Spiders lift the trophy! http://t.co/YePpcMP
15:21 Gotta get that slice! http://t.co/71Z4uZS
15:23 http://t.co/Su3mmaC
15:26 What they played for. http://t.co/zOPIDX9
15:28 Prizes. http://t.co/9JcbPoA
15:30 Final all-tourney team: Anderson (MVP) and Harper RICH, Wright and Johnson UD, Allen TU. Our sympathy vote for Langston Galloway: outvoted.
