Game 7-079: Princeton at Penn
March 9, 2011 6:53 am ET by Kyle Whelliston

Princeton Tigers at Pennsylvania Quakers

March 8, 2011 7:00 pm
The Palestra
BBState Stats/Recap

The final conference regular season game in the country, one of the most ancient and storied rivalries in Hoops Nation. A lot on the line, too. Princeton wins to force an Ivy playoff against Harvard at Yale on Saturday. The final college game for five Quaker seniors, the first class since the Jack McCloskey era in the early 1960s to leave school without an Ivy championship. But BOOBA turns the tide of the game to the Tigers, and is then fully explained and prayed to. A wireless outage forces a thumb workout of epic proportions. Also, I mistake spring for winter, the pinnacle of #omgivyDUNXage (Miles Cartwright pulls a Shay Shine), and fastdunks. "You look like a dinosaur, SHUT UP!"

@midmajority Game Tweets

19:01 Game No. 7-079: Princeton at Penn. Last game of the regular season. http://t.co/rwmvjXQ
19:05 You know the situation. Harvard a half-game up. Princeton playing for their lives. Penn playing spoiler. An Ivy playoff, or Harvard goes.
19:07 Palestra press row smells like salt and vomit tonight. As it should, as it should.
19:08 Underway. Penn 2, Princeton 1 three minutes in. Soccer score.
19:12 Princeton shooting 1/7 out of the gate but up 4-2 after five minutes.
19:14 #champfortnight MEAC: [10] Maryland-Eastern Shore 30 [7] Florida A&M 27 - Half
19:19 Princeton 15, Penn 4 at 11:14 1H. Darrow a flat-footed 3 for Princeton. These tweets may seem somber, but the wireless here is down.
19:21 Princeton huddlz. http://t.co/1Ohssw2
19:22 Penn is on winter break right now. Building is a little quiet. Ed Rendell looks quite tan. #clearwater?
19:23 Miles Cartwright with a hoop at the end of 1Q to give Penn six. Princeton has 15.
19:24 Corrected. It is cold though. RT @skyvan: @midmajority Penn is NOT on winter break. They're on Spring Break.
19:27 Penn cuts it to 15-10 at 7:47 1H. Douglas Davis has a pair of #superhoops for Princeton. We await the arrival of BOOBA.
19:30 #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [10] La Salle 75 [7] Saint Bonaventure 73 - Final
19:30 Penn nine straight points to cut it to three. Princeton up 15-13 at 7:31 1H. Miles Cartwright with six.
19:32 Make that two. Typing on glass is hard. Maddox slices the Penn run with a layup. But a Bernardini 3! 17-16 Tigers.
19:34 You are here. http://t.co/7f67eoM
19:37 Half-game back of Harvard. Need to win to force a one-game playoff. RT @paulsalz: @midmajority Princeton... Win and in?
19:39 Poor shooting for both teams. PRIN 7/23. PENN 7/17. Both teams have eight turns at 3:39 1H. Quakers up 21-19.
19:40 RT @midmajority360: #champfortnight Sun Belt: [W5] Arkansas-Little Rock 19 [W4] North Texas 19 - 5:21 1H
19:45 Sitting next to the ESPN3 booth. Very efficient operation. The stats guy is working his ass off. Has an iPad for scoring.
19:45 RT @thehemogoblin: @midmajority I have to say, it's weird to see you tweeting from a game broadcast by ESPN, even if it is solely online. You're big time now!
19:46 #champfortnight Mid-American: [10] Northern Illinois 32 [7] Bowling Green 34 - Half
19:46 Penn's Jack Eggleston made an #ivydunx!! Late in 1H, Quakers lead 23-19. This is a 19-4 run in progress.
19:48 #champfortnight Mid-American: [11] Eastern Michigan 22 [6] Akron 31 - Half
19:48 #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [11] Saint Louis 29 [6] Rhode Island 31 - Half
19:48 Tyler Bernardini sacrificed his body and mind on a loose ball just now. Got his jaw jammed. Missed a FT though. We are at the half.
19:50 Sparkle motion. http://t.co/Lsaqyq1
19:51 RT @jenahearn: @midmajority Aieeeeeee http://t.co/BQEPrc6

20:01 Tempo-free HT. Penn: 23 points, 29 possessions (.79). Princeton: 19 points in 29 trips (.65). Both teams: 10 TO. Not an offensive bonanza.
20:02 RT @rhyno86: @midmajority I haven't seen BOOBA yet. Though that's part of my new plan, if I don't see BOOBA, it can't hurt penn!
20:03 BOOBA can bring the offense. WHERE IS BOOBA
20:03 BOOBA is a friend and sponsor of Penn. Except that one time.
20:04 2H begins. http://t.co/3wwhfz4
20:05 Eggleston #DUNX!! 25-19 Quakers.
20:05 RT @sonic710: @midmajority NO NO- NOTORIOUS
20:06 You can "get them there." RT @polarscribe: @midmajority Does BOOBA sell guacos?
20:08 BOOBA IS HERE
20:11 And just like that, gone. Princeton slices the lead to 27-23 in two possessions.
20:13 Weird moment. PRIN's Lee Hummer at the line for intentional-foul shots, ref runs up and rips ball from hands. Took them, made them.
20:14 After BOOBA, Princeton has erased a six-point advantage. 27-27, 16:45 2H.
20:17 That Hawk's still twitchin'! RT @midmajority360: #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [12] Saint Joseph's 31 [5] George Washington 22 - 19:41 2H
20:18 RT @GMiddleberg: @midmajority hawk hunting! http://t.co/Dncg1Q2

20:21 Here at the Palestra, tied at 32. Ian Hummer with six of the 14 Tiger points in the first seven mins of 2H.
20:23 AP writer next to me has one thing on his screen: "fast dunks." I hope that makes it into the story!! 34-34 tie at 13:05 2H.
20:24 #champfortnight Big Sky: [3] Weber State 22 [2] Montana 12 - Half
20:28 Fan behind me, re: Ian Hummer. "You look like a dinosaur, SHUT UP!" Tracy Morgan, is that you?
20:28 RT @zbloxham: @midmajority Weber up 10 at halftime. Anthony Johnson graduated from Montana, correct? #nightmares
20:29 RT @theupsetblog: Montana in one stat comparison: Grizzlies had more offensive rebs (6) than field goals (3). #howisthatpossible? #yeesh #BigSky @midmajority
20:29 RT @judasdac: For real RT @polarscribe: I want to see the tempo-free stats on this one. RT @midmajority #champfortnight Bi… (cont) http://deck.ly/~uTZ3V
20:30 RT @mwmiller20: Requires the game having a tempo. RT @polarscribe: want to see the tempo-free stats. RT @midmajority Big Sky: [3] WEB 22 [2] MONT 12 - HT
20:32 Nearing end of 3Q, Princeton up 40-38. Tight this half, Tigers were up by 11 early before massive Penn run.
20:36 #champfortnight MEAC: [10] Maryland-Eastern Shore 66 [7] Florida A&M 64 - Final
20:36 Ghost Hunter Zack Rosen with a jumper for Penn, then a #superhoop the other way! Princeton by 5 at 7:47 2H. http://t.co/JFzgIqd
20:40 My condolences. 49-42 PRIN 6:45 2H. RT @devyanks90: Thanks @midmajority for the penn-princeton updates. Stuck at a devilsgame.
20:40 RT @midmajority360: #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [12] Saint Joseph's 43 [5] George Washington 33 - 9:05 2H
20:42 Princeton breaking it open with bombs. 55-42 at 5:21 2H. Just realized @dgoneil1 is here. Hi Dana!
20:44 #champfortnight Mid-American: [10] Northern Illinois 54 [7] Bowling Green 74 - Final
20:44 10-seed ahead in the MEAC. RT @midmajority360: Md-Eastern Shore 66 Florida A&M 64 | UMES 9-21 (5-11) FAMU 12-20 (7-9) | http://t.co/BaNjBMC
20:46 Once again, this game came down to BOOBA. Penn up six when it arrived, reliquished lead, 18-point swing. When did Quakers lose the power?
20:48 With the (shrinking lead) exception of St Joe's, other 7 campus-site first round games in MAC and A-12 going to seed.
20:49 Palestra bowl pretty quiet. Princeton band kicks up in the far corner. They are LOUD. Guy with a shark hat is keeping the beat.
20:50 RT @thehemogoblin: @midmajority What's BOOBA? It's not in your directory, and a Google search of "BOOBA midmajority" did nothing to help me out.
20:51 I guess it's time to explain BOOBA. Te old Palestra light signboards are really old. They show the sponsor names during the games.
20:52 It was explained to me once that the scoreboard light wires have to be replaced regularly because squirrels come in and chew them.
20:53 Anyway, whenever they show Qdoba on the board it looks like BOOBA. As in, the great graven image of the god BOOBA.
20:54 And whenever BOOBA arrives, Penn usually goes on a run. But that was the beginning of the season. Lately, BOOBA has turned against Penn.
20:55 So here is the key to the Penn Quakers 2011-12 season: how do we placate and please BOOBA? Got that, Blue Ribbon? Print it.
20:57 Here in 2011, it's Princeton 63 Penn 54 with 2:29 left. It appears we are heading towards a one-game Ivy playoff on Saturday.
20:58 #champfortnight Atlantic 10: [11] Saint Louis 61 [6] Rhode Island 70 - Final
21:00 This is also Senior Night, the last one anywhere this season, for Penn.
21:01 Miles Cartwright, just a froshhh, threw down a defiant slam bam DAMN #omgholys___ivydunx. Less than a minute. 67-57 Princeton.
21:02 #champfortnight Mid-American: [11] Eastern Michigan 53 [6] Akron 67 - Final
21:02 At Yale. RT @paulsalz: @midmajority where is the Ivy playoff?
21:03 RT @jenahearn: @midmajority maybe I need to swear off Distrito. Tableside tortilla soup angers it.
21:04 #champfortnight Mid-American: [12] Toledo 57 [5] Ohio 74 - Final
21:05 Dan Monckton, Conor Turley, Jack Eggleston, Darren Smith and Andreas Schreiber playing their final college games for Penn.
21:06 #champfortnight Mid-American: [9] Central Michigan 50 [8] Buffalo 64 - Final
21:08 The Ivy League regular season is over. Princeton 70, Penn 58. And... There's a tie! Harvard and Princeton will play off.
