Bullet Points
Congratulations to the newest champions of Hoops Nation. On Monday night, Old Dominion defended its Colonial Athletic Association tourney title with a win over death-rival VCU. In the SoCon, Wofford won its second-ever and second straight automatic bid by defeating Charleston. Saint Peter's, the No. 5 seed in the MAAC, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1995 with a defensive shutdown of Iona.
Out west, Gonzaga defeated Saint Mary's to wrest back the West Coast Conference title with a 75-63 decision. The Gaels join the pool of potential mid-major at-larges. We go through this every year. The best mental approach to this situation is that these teams lost, and are thereby dead until somehow resurrected. So don't ask us if any of these teams are getting in. We don't know. But the process is fair. Advice: let go now. Avoid seeking out soothing words that will build your hopes. Heartbreak now is easier than heartbreak on Sunday, and a selection surprise is sweeter than anything.Three championships will be decided tonight. The Badlands Conference will send one of its top two seeds, but the Sun Belt bracket is wrecked beyond recognition. Thanks to research by @RaginCajunsBeat, we know that if the seeds were flattened instead of division-based, North Texas and UALR would be a 7/8 matchup. In the Horizon League. Butler, the 2010 national runner-ups and No. 2 seed in this tourney, will play at top seed Milwaukee. The Big Sky narrows its field down to two tonight, as the last four meet at Northern Colorado. It's been a while since we had leagues join the Championship Fortnight party. Opening rounds at campus sites tonight in the Mid-American and the Atlantic 14, now the Atlantic 12. The MEAC gets going with a pair of first-round games.Five days until Selection Sunday.
