Bullet Points

  • Congratulations to the first three champions of Hoops Nation for 2011. Morehead State won its second OVC championship in three years. UNC Asheville, the school with the second-lowest athletic budget in Division I ($3.2 million) will represent the Big South after upending regular season champions Coastal Carolina on its own floor. Belmont won the automatic bid from the Atlantic Sun, and are already a popular buzz NCAA upset pick.
  • Other than Asheville, most games went according to seed on a busy Saturday. Lower seeds that advanced included No. 3 Indiana State in the Valley, and the No. 5 and No. 6 in the America East, Stony Brook and Hartford. Furman, South-3 in the SoCon, dumped North-2 Chattanooga, in Chattanooga. Denver, the Sun Belt's West-3, was eliminated by East-6 Florida International.
  • Finals are set in the Horizon League (Butler at Milwaukee, Tuesday) and Missouri Valley (Indiana State vs. Missouri State at Saint Louis, today).

  • Semifinal Sunday in many leagues. Rounds of four will take place in the Patriot League, Northeast, West Coast, SoCon, MAAC and America East. The Badlands Conference finishes up its quarterfinals in Sioux Falls, and the Sun Belt starts theirs in Hot Springs.
  • Twenty-one games today, with a number of at-large candidates in action. The front page light board will keep teams lit if they lose during Championship Fortnight and have an RPI of 35 or better.
  • Keep track of seeds and games with @midmajority360 score updates, or Basketball State's all-in-one page.
