Tourney Central 3/5/2011 (Day 5)

Now it's mad, as in madness. Among the 22 teams eliminated from National Championship contention on Friday, Murray State became the first in Hoops Nation to be forced into using their NIT card. Tennessee Tech chased the Racers 64-59 at the OVC semis in Nashville.
Three defending champions were sent home. In addition to Murray State, 2010 Sweet Sixteen qualifiers Northern Iowa was taken out by Creighton in the Missouri Valley quarters. No. 2 seed and Atlantic Sun champions East Tennessee State were shocked by No. 6 North Florida, a team that hadn't beaten the Buccaneers in 11 previous tries.
Seven lower seeds won in total, including the WCC's Loyola Marymount, Georgia State and William & Mary in the topsy-turvy Colonial first round, and Marist in the MAAC.
Today is the busiest day of Championship Fortnight. For starters, three champions will be decided. The Big South final pits Coastal Carolina and UNC Asheville, the Atlantic Sun will send either Belmont or North Florida, and the OVC title-winner will be Tennessee Tech or Morehead State.
The Horizon League is on to its Milwaukee-based semifinals, and the Missouri Valley turns four into two at Saint Louis. The America East, Metro Atlantic, SoCon and Colonial all hold full quarterfinal quadruple-headers. The West Coast Conference contests two second-round matchups, and the winners will play top seeds Saint Mary's and Gonzaga tomorrow.
New conferences join up today as well. The Badlands play two of its four quarters in Sioux Falls. The Big Sky begins its first round at campus sites, and the Sun Belt gets underway in Hot Springs, Ark. with four first round matchups.
