In Day Two of Championship Fortnight, five higher seeds advanced. Three higher seeds went down. Patriot League No. 6 Lafayette upset No. 3 Holy Cross, never trailing in a 77-70 win. In the Ohio Valley, neither of the first round games went according to seed. No. 8 Tennessee-Martin ended Tennessee State's downward-spiral season, and No. 7 Southeast Missouri eliminated No. 6 Eastern Kentucky.
In an extremely close call, Atlantic Sun No. 2 and two-time defending champions East Tennessee State survived a botched final possession by No. 7 Campbell and won 54-53. Top seed Belmont broke their game open with No. 8 Kennesaw State and pulled away with a 10-2 run late in the first half.The Atlantic Sun continues with two quarterfinals, and the Ohio Valley moves on to a second round. The Big South semis will be held under one roof at Conway, S.C., home of Coastal Carolina.Three more tourneys get underway today. There's an 8/9 game in the America East, a first round in the Missouri Valley, and a full slate of Northeast quarterfinals.Thirteen more seasons will end today.

Smith's heroics help ETSU survive Campbell scare, 54-53 - Senior Mike Smith (Vandalia, Mo.) made a game-saving steal with three seconds left and scored a game-high 24 points, as the ETSU men's basketball team survived a major scare and dropped Campbell 54-53 Wednesday night during quarterfinal play in the General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the University Center. In a one-point game with just seconds remaining, Campbell's senior guard Junard Hartley dribbled into the lane while attempting to make a game-winning play. Men's Basketball Team Rallies To Beat Tennessee State In First Round Of OVC Tournament - Jason James, the second-year head men's basketball coach at The University of Tennessee at Martin, has always stressed defense. His upstart Skyhawks listened tonight in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at Municipal Auditorium. The Skyhawks, the No. 8 seed in the eight-team tournament, overcame two 10-point deficits in the second half and rallied to claim a 68-64 victory over No. 5 seed Tennessee State. Men's Basketball Advances to PL Semi's with 69-53 Win - The American University men's basketball team advanced to the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals with a 69-53 victory over Colgate Wednesday night at Bender Arena. The Eagles will now host Lafayette on Sunday, March 6 at 5:00 p.m. live on CBS College Sports. Vlad Moldoveanu led the way for American, finishing with 31 points on 11-of-19 shooting, while Stephen Lumpkins recorded 19 points and 15 boards to notch his third double-double in the last five games. Nick Hendra tied his career-high with nine assists, the ninth straight game in which he's dished out four assists or more. Willen and Leopards Take W From Worcester - Five players scored in double figures for Lafayette which never trailed in a 77-70 win over Holy Cross on Wednesday night the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals. Lafayette now will take on No. 2 seed American in the Patriot League Tournament Semifinals at 5 p.m. on Sunday at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. Men's Basketball Challenges The Mount In NEC Quarterfinals Thursday - - The second-seeded Quinnipiac University men's basketball team plays host to No. 7 Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference Tournament Quarterfinal action Thursday at the TD Bank Sports Center. The teams split a pair of meetings this season, with each team winning on its home court. Both teams reached the NEC Semifinals a year ago, with the Bobcats advancing to the finals with a win against LIU, while the Mount fell at Robert Morris. Quinnipiac has met Mount St. Mary's once before in the NEC Tournament, an 80-70 loss in the quarterfinals, Mar. 6, 2008, in Emmitsburg. The Mountaineers are just 3-15 on the road this season, but put a scare into the Bobcats in Hamden on Dec. 4. James Johnson put the Bobcats' fears to rest, erupting for eight points in the final 57 seconds, including a runner with 0.5 seconds left in regulation, to win it.
