Could you survive a full-blown Chicken Riot? Boston is a city that's historically been a place for beans, chowder, Store 24's and Fenway Franks. But as the area exports its Dunkin' Donuts to the world at large, it has left the back door open to outside entities, cultural impurity and the same kind of where-am-I confusion that is befalling many American cities recently. One such example is southern-style chicken. Directly across from the Agganis Arena, a hockey arena and concert venue that serves as the temporary home of BU men's basketball, is a chain restaurant that's usually chock-full of people eating breasts and pickles. A sentence I thought I'd never type: Boston loves its chicken.

So anyway, there is a challenge contest in each game, where BU has to do something good and specific, and everybody will get free chicken. Last week when we visited Agganis, they had to hold Binghamton to below 60. That didn't happen. This time, a player had to get 2,000 career points. Easy enough, because John Holland was 13 points away. But after a slow first half from the Terrier star, there was restlessness and unease. The anticipation peaked when Holland hit a few buckets to start the second. A murmur of "chi-cken, chi-cken" went up from the student section. And when a three-pointer clinched Holland's place in Boston Uniersity basketball history, there was an explosive cheer. Were they happy for him, or for themselves? Probably both. But after the game, across the street in a restaurant with its nameplate obscured by snow, there was a long line. Chicken was served.
