New England has had a tough winter. Snowstorm after blizzard after Nor'Easter has dumped feet and feet of snow on the upper right-hand corner of Hoops Nation; it's piled high along the sides of roads, shoved into alleyways, stored wherever it can be stored. There's not a lot of space here, since people are taking up so much of it. Truck-earthmover teams that shovel the snow into dumpsters and then haul it away to who-knows-where so that the people can get to where they need to go. But as soon as progress is made, another storm comes along.

Wednesday night, another giant pink blob moved up the Eastern seaboard weather map, headed straight for America East territory. A few hundred people took refuge from the oncoming storm in spacious Agganis Arena, Boston University's home for hockey -- and the occasional Terriers basketball game. The men's team plays four or five games a year there now, instead of at The Roof. On this one-night-only, a women's-men's doubleheader.









This mascot, Rhett the Terrier, took refuge of a different sort. His locker room at Agganis is a storage closet. Oh, the humanity!



The storm never came to Boston, veering right into the Atlantic after pounding Washington, Philadelphia and New York. This time, at least, the Hub was spared. BU plays at Agganis again next week against Maine; plenty of time for people to dig out, buy tickets, and show up, and for Rhett to negotiate a better locker room.
