Sometimes Our Game is so difficult to understand. Can you wrap your head around the concept of retractable bleachers? Somehow, with hydraulics and sparklepony magic, a wall transforms into a thousand chairs. Not only that, but there are stairs and a railing and when you shuck your peanut shells, they go somewhere underneath. I don't know what drug lets a normal non-engineering major human truly make sense of all that, but it ain't caffeine.

Can you grok a basketball game with five baskets, not one?

Perhaps you can make sense of the Horizon League in 2011 then. With just one day to lick their wounds from Butler's epoch-defining powr-thump on Friday, a Cleveland State team that was 15-1 on Thursday went to Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon. They executed just as badly on offense, were punished for it, and had to dig out of a 15-point hole with four minutes to go. They could only manage a 10-0 run, and lost. So there were four teams in first place in the Horizon League, and the Vikings weren't even one of them.

An hour later, the ARC at Valpo was empty again, and university workers rolled up the bleachers. Carefully watching them retract and reform as a wall, I still couldn't figure it out. So later on, I went to consider some other, easier mysteries of life, like why people buy hard-boiled eggs from $8/lb. salad bars at supermarkets.

At 63 grams, that's a dollar an egg. Nope, can't figure that one out either.

@midmajority Game Tweets

14:33 RT @valpo2006: @midmajority We have #ScoreboardFail here today...luckily not the main one though!
14:39 Game No. 7-036: Cleveland State at Valpo. The Horizon tour concludes.
14:46 Five minutes in, Cleveland State up 7-4, Cole with an early #superhoop.
14:48 RT @adamamin: someone has sat down next to me on press row. it is not @midmajority, although the nametag would claim that it should be.
14:50 Sort of a high-possession, low-productivity shootout so far here at Valpo. Both teams shooting around 30%, 11-8 CLST at 12:00 1H.
14:52 Hott action. Bleacher side of the ARC is full, chairbacks about half so. 80% full on balance, or thereabouts. http://img.ly/2Ml1
14:53 The four-day Horizon League tour has been great! We've seen everybody except Youngstown and the two Wisconsin schools.
14:56 Green Bay beat Milwaukee in a 69-64 yesterday. Army and Navy have the Star Game and the not-the-Star-Game, this was #ALLCAPSGAMEPREVIEW.
14:57 I'm in the navy thinstripes today. #TMMsuitTracker RT @HLNAdam: @midmajority Horizon League Rulezz!!11! #nosuitdiscrimination
14:57 RT @adamamin: most of Valpo's shots = GREAT looks. ARE NOT FINISHING AT THE RIM. @midmajority @valpo2006
14:59 Cole with a flying MVP-style runner in transy, and CLST is up 17-8 early in the second quarter. MTO3, time for some Rihanna hair whipz!
15:00 I've been informed by @adamamin's Robot that Butler is up "only" 41-37 on Youngstown at the half. Mack 15, Howard 11.
15:01 Sadly, no. Love Qwest. Is the car show coming up? RT @ckestel @midmajority Are you going to be in Omaha Wednesday for the Shockers and Jays?
15:02 Thanks to @valpo2006 for sorting out my Robot access. One of the finest SIDs in the business, & with an indie rock beard now too! #llladies
15:04 CLST getting healthy from the floor, Jeremy Montgomery the early star: 8 pts on 4/8. 19-8 Vikings 5:45 1H, executing 10848% better than Fri.
15:06 The jinxx! Two straight bad turnovers for the Vikings by Cole and Montgomery off excessive dribblz. Cory Johnson two FT's on the other end.
15:07 So it's 19-10 Cleveland State at 4:37 2H. Valpo almost 10 minutes without a FG.
15:09 BU defends the Roof, '10 finalists both 2-1 now. RT @midmajority360: Vermont 65 Boston University 74 | http://tmm7.me/8ep #A-EAST
15:12 Also, a reminder that the @midmajority360 StatBlast runs Sundays (6x week, no Sat) with the second half of the conference alphabet.
15:13 Here, it's 21-14 in a #footballscore, Valpo broke their no-FG streak after over nine minutes. CLST starting to edge into foul trouble.
15:15 Bally can taste the action! http://img.ly/2Mlr
15:15 Cory Johnson with a layup for Valpo, and the Crusaders are running! 41 ticks left in the first half, 21-18 Cleveland State.
15:19 And that's halftime. Valpo closes the first half on a 10-2 run, and it's 21-18 Vikings.
15:20 Elsewise, Youngstown State has tied up Butler at 51. Wait, YSU up 53-51 at 13:29 2H. A Penguin win would lead to some #headxplodz, no?
15:31 The Crusader gets ready to emerge from the tunnel, WWE-style. http://img.ly/2MlB
15:32 No idea what's going on here, but cash and prizes are involved. #youareentertained http://img.ly/2MlE
15:34 Press room agape/agog watching Associated Foot-ball Collective "wyld card." Did not know the Kansas City Chiefs still existed before today.
15:34 OMG You have a flux capacitor in your Robot?! RT @adamamin: Hey! Check out Bally in 1923!!! @midmajority http://twitpic.com/3ok943
15:36 This is basketball, and this is the second half of a Horizon game between Valpo and Cleveland State. Valpo takes the lead 24-23 at 18:19.
15:38 Ryan Broekhoff with a #superhoop for Valpo, and the Crusaders are up 27-25. Turnover, CLST! Brandon Wood layup, 29-25!
15:39 Cole loses control, does some Globetrotters s___ on the court to keep the dribble, throws it in to Pogue for the #omgdunx! 33-29 Valpo.
15:40 RT @donpot: @midmajority Looks like a bigger version of Bozo's Grand Prize Game. I'd expect that up by Chi-town. #childhood
15:43 The Crusader's handheld shield may not protect him, but it is really good to clap with. http://img.ly/2MlT
15:44 RT @adamamin: @midmajority what the hell is a GIGAWATT????
15:47 For the Valpo alums: "Our challenge has been hurled." Can only assume nobody knows what it means, or that you guys can flat out PAR-TAY.
15:48 Jay Harris #superhoop, and Valpo builds a two-possession cushion at 13:06 2H. 40-36.
15:48 RT @mdholmes12: Cheering on my #WMUBroncos right now, but with bad offense, this game is hard to watch @midmajority Typical CMU-WMU game #pixelvision
15:48 RT @bubbaprog: @midmajority 5:21 left Ohio 60 Miami 58. Bobcat Reggie Keely just fouled out.
15:50 Seen CLST a few times on #pixelvision, etc., but I haven't seen them run into as many dumb, poorly-executed self-stops as this weekend.
15:51 Youngstown State up 76-74 on Butler at the three-minute mark down in Indianapolis. Four Penguins in dubl-figures, including Evgeni Malkin.
15:53 Here, Valpo has scrambled the CLST defense almost as much as Butler did the other night. 45-38, end of the third quarter.
15:53 RT @sarah_black: @midmajority 79-76 Butler after a #superhoop and a layup from Mack. #pixelvision
15:54 #SANDSTORM
15:55 In Indy, Howard fouls out and Youngstown State ties it back up at 79. Here, Valpo extends the lead to nine.
15:56 That rhymes! RT @adamamin Howard Little becoming star of game at both ends of the floor. 6p 9r (4 off), 4 ass. HUGE on glass. @midmajority
15:58 Trevon Harmon deep three from the corner, and in two possessions, Cleveland State cuts the lead to four.
16:00 Youngstown with the ball, down three, 18 seconds left. Annnnnd...
16:00 Here in NW Indiana, Jay Harris and Brandon Wood go all #superhoop tag team on CLST, and it's 53-45 Valpo at 6:44 2H.
16:01 Looks like Butler will escape. Blake Allen missed 3 for YSU, off foul on the off reb, two FT's by Mack. Bulldogs by four at :03.
16:05 Final from the capital: Butler 84, Youngstown State 79. Here, this may be just as over? Valpo takes lead into dubl figures at 5:30.
16:06 CLST won all those games by playing under control and executing well; a total mess this weekend. 38% FG, 14 turns, Cole 3-for-11.
16:08 Woeful Purple Eagles' first league win (4-13, 1-4). Comes vs. league champs. Hell, why not? RT @midmajority360: Siena 55 Niagara 69 #MAAC
16:11 This one is now fully out of control, CLST off the cliff. 3:36 2H, Valpo leads by 15. League is on to the press + transition pts strategy.
16:14 "The Met" race shaping up: Fairfield 5-0, Iona and Rider a game back. RT @midmajority360: Rider 77 Canisius 76 | http://tmm7.me/8et #MAAC
16:17 But in just two minutes, desperate/gutsy CLST has cut the Valpo lead by two-thirds. 60-55 at 1:50 2H after two Harmon FT's.
16:19 Gary Waters: not the happiest guy. http://img.ly/2Mmp
16:19 RT @bubbaprog: DJ COOPER HITS THE THREE TO TIE! OHIO AND MIAMI GO TO DOUBLE-OT @midmajority
16:20 Norris Cole a dead-eye corner 3 that lipped out, would have cut lead to 2. But a Harmon layup cuts it to 3 on next poss. 60-57, 1 min left.
16:22 Vikings were down 15 at 3:36, down by three at 1:00. 17-5 run.
16:24 But it may be too little. Broekhoff with a three and a chest-pound for Valpo, and it's 63-57, under a minute left. Substitution chess match!
16:25 Cole misses the back end of a pair of FT's, CLST loses the rebound fite, and that'll probably do it. Valpo by five, 17.7, foul time.
16:27 Broekhoff and Michael Rogers do a flying back bump with 6 ticks left, which is the universal signal for "we won." #peopleareleaving
16:29 Final! VALP scraps out a win over a suddenly sloppy, stunned, disjointed Cleveland State team, 64-58. I've had Lost Weekends in Indiana too!
17:20 Love this picture. The World's Tallest Team, 1945. #valpo http://img.ly/2MmY
