Game 7-020: Valparaiso at Loyola (Ill.)

Valparaiso Crusaders at Loyola (Ill.) Ramblers

BBState Stats/Recap

Think of Chicago. Cold city. Dark. Dark in the winter. But not cold and dark enough for a dude in the LU Wolf suit not to walk around slapping high fives with fans arriving for an early Horizon League preview.

Loyola won a National Championship once. People sometimes forget that. But George Ireland's team beat all comers and took it all in 1963. The team the Ramblers beat in the semifinals was Duke.

Here in 2010, in the age of stuffed basketballs with press row access, the Ramblers were playing Valparaiso, a school just south of the city in Indiana. One thousand miles to the east, Duke was playing Loyola's Horizon Leaguemates (and recent conference opener conquerors) from Butler in a rematch of the 2010 title game.

So our attention was a little bit split on this day. As Butler gave up a late run and fell away, Loyola shot horribly from the free throw line and let Valpo leave town with a league win. This will also go down as a shot clock failure game, and the public address announcer called out "FIFTEEN" whenever an allowable possession was just over halfway finished. Then, at five seconds, a countdown would begin.

Also, a Valpo player yacked behind the bench. FIFTEEN.

15:05 RT @wbryan08: From @midmajority ... "brick walls are there to stop the OTHER people."
15:18 RT @brendanloy: Can unranked Butler beat #1, unstoppable-looking Duke? Probably not, but... #ThereIsAlwaysHope! http://twitpic.com/3cx0na @midmajority
15:19 RT @DBear5: Now we have Duke/Butler. Hoops nation unite. The @midmajority needs you.
16:04 [RLU ALERT] Northern Iowa 64, Texas Christian 60 | http://tmm7.me/5rl @RedLineUpsets
16:05 Game 7-020: Valparaiso at Loyola (Ill.). I blame everything on the Lake Effect.
16:05 RT @pretzel_logic: I have to say, I wish @midmajority was here. If only so he could write about the Xanadu project. I know he'd nail it.
16:06 Our bodies are here, but our thoughts are with Butler as they try to avenge last year's Nat'l Championship game loss. Will RT your updates.
16:07 Also a huge slate of #pixelvision, plus some great games like the Albany-Siena game and the OVC showdown between Murray and Morehead.
16:08 RT @SanDiegoPoke: @midmajority Buitler-Duke tied at 33 at halftime
16:09 We have some sort of delay here at the Gentile Center. Refs huddling around the scorer's table, and everybody has their phones out.
16:10 fact checkin cuz (on press row) >>>> RT @valpo2006: @midmajority Shot clock fail.
16:11 #shotclockfail is giving us a great opportunity to hear the Band of Wolves run through their book.
16:13 Shot clock will be run through the PA system today. Warning at 15 seconds, countdown at 5. Awesome!!! We are tipped here in Chicago.
16:15 Loyola's Courtney Stanley opens the scoring with a #superhoop, and the Ramblers are up 3-0 two minutes in. FIFTEEN.
16:17 Gentile Center. http://img.ly/2yPf
16:18 Loyola's home uniforms are pretty awesome. Straight out of the 1960s. Script face, thin block numbers, and triple trim. Triple trim. Yes.
16:18 #horchata4mids RT @HustleBelt: @midmajority Ask the PA guy to announce 15 en español. Could be a new thing. #QUINCE
16:20 RT @sarah_black: Howard with the #OMGdunx to start the 2nd! @midmajority
16:21 Also, there was a giant snow dump on the city last night. Just in case anyone needed to be reminded that it's December.
16:22 RT @bubbaprog: Matt Howard #omgdunx to open the second half: http://30fram.es/fb @midmajority
16:24 Here in Chicago, no #omgdunx yet. Valpo, who can shoot and steal very well, is up 12-7 on Loyola in their Screamin' Yellow Zonkers unis.
16:25 Also, quick programming note during this MTO: our next game (#21) will be Tuesday at one of our favorite buildings, the ARC. Purdue @ Valpo.
16:28 Valpo is 5-2 to start the year, with decent mid wins vs. No. Colorado & Corpus Christi. FIFTEEN.
16:31 Also, if you missed it, Northern Iowa RLU'd TCU, and La Salle pushed Oklahoma State to 2OT before falling. And Duke and Butler still close.
16:32 Would also like to thank Ballito's Horchata for sponsoring our out-of-town scoreboard updates. #promotweet
16:33 Here in the wonderful Windy City, it's 14-11 Valpo at the end of the first quarter. FIFTEEN.
16:34 http://www.midmajority.com/redline RT @mariobc8: @midmajority You don't consider the Mountain West a mid major?
16:36 Howard Little just nailed a #superhoop for Valpo as Terrance Hill punched him in the stomach. That's a foul, AND a high DOD shot. #nice
16:38 Is there gambling on this? $5 on Delmonico. #albany #siena RT @bmckim: I can't wait for Name that Meat tonight. (Cc: @midmajority @EdXeno)
16:40 More than slightly impressed by Valpo so far. Solid, hard-jawed, picks great shots and is leading 23-17 at 6:08 1H. Shooting 59%. FIFTEEN.
16:44 Elsewise, Duke's put on a 9-0 run and leads by seven at the end of the third quarter in New Jersey. Need a comeback! #h8duke
16:45 RT @kevinhazaert: @midmajority Massive foul trouble for Butler. Hahn OUT, Nored 4, Howard 3, Mack on bench cramping again, down 51-44, under 12 T.O.
16:48 Small but energetic post-snowstorm crowd here today. There seems to be a bit of real deal Rambler fever in Chicago. 7-1, lost by 2 v BUTL.
16:48 FIFTEEN.
16:50 Who's got Real Deal Rambler Fever? #thisguy http://img.ly/2yPV
16:52 I can hear the slaps from here, 1K miles away. Stay strong. RT @sevenandsevens Must be nice to play slap D w/out worrying about whistles.
16:54 Here in Shouldertown, it's halftime! Which means it's time for a snack at Alumni Gym. A good Valpo team leads a good LUC team 34-28.
17:11 LOYO: white, VALP: blinding yellow RT @mwmiller20: @midmajority Since Loyola is in gold, is Valpo having to do the white on the road thing?
17:12 Second half at the Gentile Center. Courtney Stanley (who's been going #hoopnutz) with a j, and he's 4-for-5 with 10. VALP lead cut to 34-30.
17:19 #DUKE: appears to have Butler beat. #PUKE: Valpo's Erik Buggs just barfed in a trash can behind the bench. 15:28, VALP 37-22. FIFTEEN.
17:20 RT @adamamin: Hanging with @midmajority, @whelliston, and Bally. thanks to @valpo2006 for the photo. hoping for more #OMGDUNX. http://twitpic.com/3cy2hi
17:23 There is a Stat Crew monitor on press row that's showing what seriously looks like the welcome screen from an Apple IIe. #grampaRobot
17:24 A Terrance Hill #superhoop ties the score at 39 at the 13 minute mark of 2H. FIFTEEN.
17:25 RT @sevenandsevens: @midmajority Butler lead when Nored picked up 4th foul and Mack left game. Duke followed with 12-0 run. #PUKE #DUKE
17:29 RT @midmajority360: Butler 70 Duke 82 | BUTL: S. Vanzant 14 - DUKE: N. Smith 24 | http://tmm7.me/5sc
17:33 Crusader Cory Johnson #superhoops at the virtual buzzer of the third quarter, and it's 49-47 Valpo on a lead retake. FIFTEEN.
17:35 Watched that. Still recovering. RT @SethHunt105: @midmajority yellow v. white combo not as bad as when Ore St (orange) was at Seattle (red).
17:38 Other scores: Houston and Sam Houston caught in an OT battle, and some good-looking CAA games tight in 2H, NU-Drexel and Hofstra-Towson.
17:42 LU Wolf really gets involved in the MTO entertainment here. There was one where he shot FT's, & he just officiated the giant-jersey contest.
17:44 #DUKE update: Ugh. #PUKE update: Erik Buggs back in the game for Valpo after a Technicolor Yawn behind the bench earlier.
17:44 RT @midmajority360: Houston 75 Sam Houston State 71 | HOU: K. Washington 21 - SAMH: G. Clavell 25 | http://tmm7.me/5sg
17:47 I keep saying this: mascots need a union. RT @BigJoeRambler: @midmajority and all they give him is leftover hot dogs, It's a wolf's life.
17:48 Five minutes to go in this one, and it's about as chippy as a game without a lot of fouls can be. 53-48 Valpo.
17:51 RT @pretzel_logic: Butler finals: 26-58 FG (44.8%) 8-15 3pt 18-43 2pt 10-20 FT. 12 OR 23 DR 35 TR 15 A 15 TO 0 Blk 10 Stl 24 PF. 70 possessions 0.993 PPP.
17:52 I only say nice things about everyone. #fact RT @pretzel_logic: And I know what @midmajority would say about it, and he's right.
17:53 RT @dcbradley: @midmajority In '05, I saw a Cleveland State player Technicolor Yawn on the court. He then scored 21 points and quit the team 2 weeks later.
17:56 Valpo now up by 10 at 3:00 2H. Loyola killing themselves at the line, 5-for-14. That kind of FT shooting inspires the #technicoloryawn
17:59 Matthews roof collapsing? #couldhappen RT @bubbaprog: DREX wins, and NU students captivated by...something? http://30fram.es/fj @midmajority
18:00 RT @dsipocz: @midmajority sounds like Valpo is taking advantage of opportunities. What kind of chances do you see for them against Butler and Purdue?
18:02 Valpo's chances vs. PUR & BUTL: A few too many TO's and the D isn't necessarily that solid, I'll say 0-2. @dsipocz
18:04 Valpo up 63-50 with a buck and a half to go. Just about done. LOYO has been a good FT shooting team so far, so this might be an aberration.
18:09 Crusaders have gone up dubl-digits, and the final score won't show how close this was for most of the game. Final seconds tick away.
18:10 Your final from Chicago: Valparaiso 66, Loyola 56. Two good-but-not-great Horizon League teams. Cle St, Butler, then these guys.
18:11 At the moment, ohyeah. RT @gidalkaiser: @midmajority you got the Vikings ahead of Butler?
18:14 Day off tomorrow (which we need) and no games Monday - but we will be around to be sassywitchu on teh Tweeterz. Good Evening Hoops Nation.
