There's cold, and there's Midwest December cold. It's the kind of freeze that numbs your extremities and ears, then goes to work on your heart and feelings. Perhaps I'm overreacting, because I'm typing this while inside, later. And perhaps I'm wrong, because northeastern Ohio isn't cold enough for its citizens to forget a famous native son's infamous betrayal.



It was just a non-conference game between Kent State and a current Sun Belt/former Southland team that hardly anybody in attendance had ever heard of, but there were only a few hundred people at Kent State on Thursday because nearly everybody was at home watching the Cleveland Cavaliers play the Miami Heat. The television told us it was very important, and that there was a chance that there would be a violent court storming, but there were a few conscientious objectors who wanted to watch basketball instead of media histrionics. These were our people.



We were seated up above, on the side.

During the game, we kept hearing about this magical local delicacy called "flavored crust pizza." Apparently, there were different kinds, and nearly all Kent State students identify themselves by their favorite Hungry Howie's flavor: butter, butter cheese, cajun, garlic herb, onion, ranch, sesame and original. I imagined myself as more than a butter cheese person, but I could only imagine. There was no flavored crust pizza to be found.



And then, once we finally found the press room after the game, there was a stack of boxes. It was almost as if this moment was constructed and synthesized just for us, but the fact that the writers and photographers had ransacked the pies was proof that this was not the case. Still, there were two cold cheese slices left shivering in a pile of crumbs. Verdict: f___ing delicious.
