Game 7-018: Columbia at Bucknell

Columbia Lions at Bucknell Bison

BBState Stats/Recap

It's amazing to think that back in Season 2, there was serious talk about Bucknell being "the next Gonzaga," another academics-first school that would use the NCAA Tournament to transcend mid-majordom forever. Two Round of 32 appearances tend to inspire that type of irrational exuberance.

But here in Season 7, the Bison have endured three straight losing years, have fallen completely off the national map, and have difficulty getting enough actual Bucknell students to come to games to put together a respectable "Sojka Psychos" section. Seriously, there were about 100 students there. Sic transit gloria and all that.

Okay, this is getting way too Bergman. Bally and I went to Lewisburg on Wednesday night, enjoyed wonderful hospitality, and held our nightly Twitter talk show. We discussed pie.

Afterwards, we went to a local Applebee's, and it was karaoke night. At an Applebee's. All the women sang Taylor Swift songs, and the dudes went nu-Nashville. One guy did David Allen Coe's "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" with all the spoken word cues. Central Pennsylvania is the Tennessee that never was, and for that we love it.

@midmajority Game Tweets

18:08 How pleasant it is to encounter the cold roads and warm hearts of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. And "go Dragons football," whatever that means!
18:11 RT @Smoore1117: @midmajority Lewisburg High School is the Dragons. Spent a few seasons working for the newspaper in Williamsport, so I know these things.
18:13 The shoes is loose RT @HoopTime: Must be a big game in Lewisburg if @midmajority is gracing Sojka with his presence Better wear sunglasses”
18:45 Lovely Sojka Pavilion. http://img.ly/2xHi
18:46 Faster days. http://img.ly/2xHl
18:47 RT @HoopTime: Willman's ankle "around 85 percent". Tyree (knee) remains out indef. 10 minutes to tip in Sojka Pavilion. The glare is blinding #kyles_shoes
18:57 RT @blkenn: @midmajority I figured they knew your alma mater and its lack of your least favorite sport - they were trolling you.
18:58 Seriously, "Dragons" and "football" belong together like "spaghetti" and "tacos." Amirite? #DREX
19:00 Game 7-018: Columbia at Bucknell. Sojka, slightly less psychotic. Spellcheck, slightly less aggressive.
19:01 This is a certified Brain Explosion Series game. #ivy #patriot #itsachessmatch
19:03 The Ivy League is dominating the Brain Explosion Series so far this season, winning eight of the first nine matchups with the Patriot.
19:05 GW Boon with a #superhoop, and Bucknell takes a 7-4 lead on Columbia three minutes in. No Minutemen references tonight, promise.
19:10 6-11 so. Mike Muscala, who had a great few days down at JMU, hits a soft squishy-swish and BUCK is up 11-8 at the 15-10 1H mark.
19:15 And it's the Sojka Psycho's birthday, so wish him happy birthday if you see him. Now who's ready for some PIZZA???? [band starts playing]
19:19 Bucknell getting its dubl-up #grind on, 20-10 at the end of the first quarter. Lions shooting just 33% to open things.
19:21 + if you've been using us as your only infosource this yr, CBB games don't really have quarters. Clarification for our int'l friends. Also.
19:23 Columbia froshhh Steve Frankowski from beautiful Florham Park NY hits a #superhoop, and suddenly the Lions are within five.
19:25 That's the way the Brain Explosion Series works, kidlets: #EXPLOSIVE runs! #guiocopianissimo
19:26 RT @MattZemek_CFN: Serious, no-snark comment: Height of Christian theology right here RT @midmajority Why Are We Doing This | http://www.midmajority.com/p/1813
19:28 Another Frankoski three-pointer for Columbia, and it's 28-25 Bucknell at the 5:18 interval! That froshhh can really hoop! #superhoop!
19:28 RT @MattZemek_CFN: Equally serious remark: Don Cheadle's character in TRAFFIC says this RT @midmajority Why Are We Doing This http://www.midmajority.com/p/1813
19:29 We work better with the lights on.
19:31 Slow start for Columbia, but really starting to look a little dangerous. Great spacing & ball movement. Have outscored BUCK 20-11 in 7 min.
19:33 If we haven't said it before, Kyle Smith was a fantastic hire (off the SMC bench). Not only because he's got a good name. Great tactician.
19:39 But Bucknell puts together some #superhoops for a late run of their own! 40-30 Buckies at the break. Hired dance team.
19:40 Take that back, it's the Bison Girls. They're just dressed very professionally. #egg
19:40 RT @cfbasketblog: The SEC in a lot of trouble thus far, RLU alert @midmajority
19:42 1st half scores: Delaware State leads South Carolina, and Central Florida has an edge on Florida. We'll try to keep you updated or RT you.
19:46 So spoiled. @ballybasketball http://img.ly/2xIg
19:47 HALFTIME POWR POLL: How much you like pie? #notmuchgoingonhere
19:48 Robot pie??? RT @dartmouthsports: @midmajority Cyber SID says a whole heck of a lot.
19:49 That's allowed RT @juliaflyer: @midmajority I love pie. I actually have considered having pie instead of cake at my wedding.
19:52 RT @bubbaprog: UCF 34 Florida 30 at the half @midmajority
19:56 Second half begins, and here we go. 40-30 Bison; that's some bad vision. Bucknell's Darryl Shazier leads all scorers with 13.
19:57 RT @KraigW: @midmajority banana cream for the win #pieisawesome
20:00 Brian Grimes, a Flipadelphia native, gets a #sofdunk + 1, and Columbia's scored the first 7 of the 2nd. #extremechess
20:05 Maybe it's b/c I like #superhoops and notice them more, but there seem to be a lot of them this year. A trade of 3's, and it's 46-42 BUCK.
20:05 #noudinnt RT @gvtaylor: @midmajority I had pie with ice cream for breakfast today.
20:07 My fave: probably bran? I dunno. We'll have to vote on it sometime. RT @thrashsoundly: @midmajority What is the official pie of TMM?
20:08 "Analyst" is the new "consultant" RT @tstandsalone: @midmajority #superhoops are the new layups! At least that's what all the analysts say!
20:09 Under 12 media timeout. Alright, who wants some PIZZA? [band starts playing] #thisisapparentlynotnorepeatwednesday
20:11 This from a man who recos hotel restaurants. RT @defiantlydutch: @midmajority I'm not sure I can be a fan of anything dubbed EXPLOSIVE RUNS.
20:11 RT @theupsetblog: i increasingly find myself wanting to live the live of @midmajority. totally awesome all the small schools he visits. gotta be fun.
20:13 RT @defiantlydutch: @midmajority: I wasn't recommending the RESTAURANT, just saying it's a good hotel w/a buffet THAT DIDN'T GIVE ME THE RUNS. *slinks away*
20:13 Uh huh.
20:14 Here in the truly edible landscape, it's the end of the third quarter and Bucknell leads 49-43 over Columbia.
20:17 @tstandsalone Just a synonym for something that doesn't have many. It's all about mixing 'em up.
20:18 Ball came flying to the table, nearly hit @ballybasketball. We came thisclose to one of those cartoon/reality Roger Rabbit portals opening.
20:22 Elsewhere, Loyola and Butler are underway, and it's 4-2 Ramblers after four minutes. Put that beach ball back in the storage room!
20:24 Bucknell up 57-48 at 6:19 2H. The only Patriot League win over the Ivy in 9 tries so far: Lehigh over Cornell on 11/22.
20:26 Bucknell Ballz. http://img.ly/2xJ1
20:28 Had a great idea earlier for a game we can play on slow nights: consensus expiration dates on pep band songs. But this game's almost over.
20:30 Shooting's gone cold for both sides, but Bucknell's up by nine b/c they have only 4 turns (Colu: 12). Four minutes to go, 60-51.
20:31 "Zoot Suit Riot." RT @ECoastBias: @midmajority what song inspired that game?
20:35 Elsewise, some hot mid-on-mid action tonight. Miami is up on Xavier midway through 2H, and the Richmond-ODU tussle looks great.
20:37 Might have been on the stereo while they were getting made. RT @ECoastBias: @midmajority Wow. Were the students even born for that song?
20:41 GW Boon with a big ol' bucket, and it's 68-58 Bucknell over Columbia with a minute to go. Warm up the bus. The bus of inestimable erudition.
20:43 RT @gmoore21566: @midmajority Tis great. Monarchs up 9 by now after being down 8 with 9:46 left in the second half. #caa #caahoops
20:44 A rousing chorus of "Ray Bucknell," which is a lot like the Rock Chalk chant but you can dance to it. 70-63 Bison with 23 seconds to go.
20:47 COLU putting on a little hectic run at the end, but it may end up simply making the score look good. :05.2, BUCK 72-68, Bison shooting FTs.
20:48 Which is the case. Intercepted Columbia baseball pass, clock dribblin', and that's a Brain Explosion final. Bucknell 73, Lions 68.
20:49 There was basketball. We talked about pie. It was good.
20:50 So tomorrow! @ Kent State, our 19th game of #S7. Love getting to see so many #MAC teams early. But we'll be in touch before then, you and I.
20:51 Good Night, Hoops Nation. Until we meet again, don't mistake shadows for ghosts.
