The past looms large at La Salle University. As in, it's freaking huginormous and hangs right behind one of the Tom Gola Arena baskets. You think your school has an awesome collection of banners, but do yours have people on them? No? Step game, son.

Having lived in Philadelphia for an extended period of time, 20th and Olney is a place where I've seen a lot of basketball. One of the best things about La Salle home games is that sometimes the band is squeezed into a student section at mid-court. It's totally informal and fun, like the old Brooklyn Dodgers SymPhony at Ebbets Field (much much much younger though). And the Explorers have always brought in an interesting mix of teams during non-conference play. On this particular night, it was Delaware State from the MEAC.

The Hornets, one of the teams that best does more with less with systemball, led for most of the game before falling late. Meanwhile, we sat on press row, and spent the one hour and 45 minutes talking about impossible shot contests and correct spelling and concession stands and "Whip My Hair," and even dealt with some hecklers. 20:43 Gola Arena always empties out faster than any arena, anywhere. Giant doors on one side, and people just stream through. Loud, then quiet.
20:46 Quick game, about 105 minutes. Still early, about 8:45 pm, and there's plenty of evening left. Students and fans hurrying to take advantage.
20:47 But it was another college basketball game, the 16th of our trip, and there will be more. And it was exciting! They all are, in some way.
