Millett Hall! This is where the Miami University Redskins-turned-RedHawks play. It is a place not of this century. It is a place of flashing lights and smoke machines and pounding bass. It is the Studio 54 of college basketball. Mostly because the home team plays so slow and deliberately that 54 is usually the final point total.



And who wouldn't love this night life? You got to boogie on this particular disco round. This was a three-day, four-team CBE Classic subregional, with the MAC's Miami hosting IUPUI (Badlands), Green Bay (Horizon) and the sole representative from over the Red Line, San Diego State of the Mountain West. As expected, they beat the crap out of everybody.



It's a place of action... it wants to give it, and it wants to get some too. Mostly it's a chance to watch Miami head coach Charlie Coles on the sidelines. Bally hearts Charlie Coles.



Charlie Coles is one of the best people in Hoops Nation, if not the world. This is a man who had a heart attack during a game 12 years ago. Then he had another huge scare three years ago, and he had to get his entire insides cleaned out, but he still didn't quit. There is nothing anywhere quite like a Charlie Coles press conference. On Saturday night, after Miami beat IUPUI, he shared the secret of why his team won. One of his players is dating Jaguars head coach Ron Hunter's daughter. "This isn't just a game," he said. "This is for bragging rights at Thanksgiving dinner!"

But that was nothing compared to Monday night's presser. He told the assembled writers how much he thought Miami was going to lose by against Ohio State that weekend (correct answer: 21), and he went off on a long tangent about Kroger supermarkets and how shiny they are inside. He brought his granddaughter along and put her in a seat, and at the end, he pleaded with us.

"Please, my granddaughter's dream is to be the head coach at Tennessee, and take over for Pat Summitt. Somebody please ask her a question, like she just won a big game with the Lady Vols."

She became deeply embarrassed, squared her shoulders tightly, and buried her chin in her neck while turning beet red. "What was the key to the game?" a beat writer asked.

She was too shy to answer. "Was it your rebounding?" Coach Coles asked. She nodded several times. "Rebounding," he repeated as he stood up. "OK, everybody, thanks for coming."
