On Thursday night, the Universities of Pittsburgh and Maryland were at Madison Square Garden in New York City, playing on national television in front of a bank of national journalists whom all somehow found different things to say about what they saw. The University of Rhode Island and the College of Charleston, two teams that came quite close to beating the aforementioned pair in the Coaches vs. Cancer event the opening two days of the season, just 10 days earlier, ended up here. In Toledo.

They would have ended up here anyway; these games have been amberfixed in their schedules since September. Even if Charleston had beaten Maryland in College Park, or if Rhode Island hadn't fallen short in the second half at Pitt: Toledo. That's right: Toledo. No matter what: Toledo.

It's easy to get wrapped up in the "unfairness" of this, to fault ESPN and the Gazelle Group for stacking the cards of tournament format so that they'd get their big draw Big East and ACC teams on TV. The problem with that fist-clenching and foot-stamping is that this is not a tournament at all. It's an opportunity to get four games for the price of one (three exempt) against the NCAA's 28-game regular season cap. And nothing more. If anyone wants to place value on a "championship" sponsored by a video game company, go right ahead. This broken bracket makes as much sense as inserting a career-prime Michael Jordan into the NBA of the present. No, really, go right ahead.

Meanwhile, we were in Toledo, having real fun.

Wheeee!

Whooooo!

Actually, that's kind of depressing. The Photoshop job, that is.

Above all, it was the opportunity to see five hours of college basketball. And college basketball is always good. We saw URI pull away late from Charleston, and the home team hung tough against visiting UIC before taking a late loss. We'll have to let the tweets speak for themselves: a long evening of #superhoops, fire pants, free Frosties, truth, consequences, and death rays that come out of Robot basketball players' asses.

Thank you, Gazelle Group. For everything.

16:39 Game 7-007: Charleston vs. Rhode Island at Toledo, Ohio (CvC subregional). We're over on the site chatting, come along!
17:31 RT @DadofTwins02: @midmajority Tell Bally not to be afraid of Beast. He's more scared of you than you are of him. #hodzic #62%2-ptfgdefense
17:33 And we're BACK! Thanks all for a great chat. Second half underway here in Toledo, URI leading CofC 29-25.
17:37 [RLU ALERT] Davidson 70, Nebraska 67 | http://tmm7.me/4kz @RedLineUpsets
17:41 RT @JeremyGuy_MAC: Word is that @midmajority is on site in Toledo. Be sure to say hello to Bally and tell him to keep checking out the #MAC on his travels!
17:41 RT @taylorevans1: @JeremyGuy_MAC @midmajority isn't even at the best #MAC event in Toledo. All the action is in the SeaGate Centre for the volleyball 'ship.
17:43 How about those cool SoCon Cats? FYI: Offshore RLU's are always duty-free.
17:47 PA guy trying to get some excitement going with the "It's a three-point play the olllllld-fashioned way!" There are like 100 people here.
17:48 Darkness on the edge of the media table. http://img.ly/2sTR
17:52 URI starting to open up a little lead here in Toledo, 53-45 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Nikola Malesevic and Delroy James with 11 each.
17:52 RT @clasbury10: the stress, the profanity, the joy, the relief... I miss this when it's gone. go cats! RT @midmajority How about those cool SoCon Cats?
17:58 For Charleston, Simmons and Goudelock are having great games again. Rest of the team shooting very poorly though. URI 55-50 8:03 2H.
18:01 Delroy James with the #superhoop for URI! Rams back up by eight. Both these teams almost won their opening games last week! #solongago
18:03 UIC: University Is Chillllllllllin' http://img.ly/2sTZ
18:05 So that's where everyone is. Toledo up 2 sets to 0 against Ball State in the @MACSports volleyball finals across town.
18:07 Jeremy Simmons made an #omgdunx for Charleston! Even in an empty arena, those make people (and chairs) happy! 66-57 URI, 4:06 2H.
18:14 Did Bono eat a baby or something? When arenas play anything off the last U2 album, people just sit there, or complain loudly.
18:15 "Elevation," however, still gets butts wigglin. 2:00 left, URI up 8. CofC playing frustrated, sorta like they did down the stretch vs. UMD.
18:18 Thank You Gazelle Group http://img.ly/2sUb
18:20 27 seconds left. While Pitt and Maryland party in NYC, URI leads Charleston 75-64 in Toledo!
18:22 And it is a final! Rhode Island 75, Charleston 66. Both teams will play two more games here this weekend.
18:26 Between games. Time to go explore Savage Arena, Bally! What do you think THIS lever does? http://img.ly/2sUj
18:38 YES. http://img.ly/2sUo
18:44 RT @MattZemek_CFN: Criminy!! No, CREMINY! #Darnit RT @midmajority 27 seconds left. While Pitt and Maryland party in NYC, URI leads Charleston 75-64 in Toledo!
18:47 Honestly, I can't believe this #pixelvision lineup. Date night? Break it. Marist-BU, Centenary-Tulane, Mo St-Tulsa; Boise-San Diego late.
18:51 Frost/Nixon 1977. RT @creative_mn @midmajority Will you give us an interview?
19:00 Wait, that rhymes. RT @chicolbball @midmajority I believe the powers that be want it to be UIC.
19:01 We will be at Miami. But Milw is hosting the #ALLCAPSGAME this year... RT @PanthersInsider Big game tomorrow! UNI @ Milwaukee... You goin??
19:04 Anthemic. http://img.ly/2sUJ
19:04 Free idea for Toledo: yell out "ROCKETS" during the national anthem right before "red glare." Unless you guys already do. #notmanypeoplehere
19:05 No list in #S7. But we're overdue for a return; it's been years. RT @GMURayRay @midmajority patriot center on your list this year?
19:07 Now that betting's closed, the Rockets are starting four freshmen. So there's that.
19:09 :fist bump: RT @Smoore1117 OK, this #pixelvision is absurdly insanely awesome on TMM. Live hoops synced with Terriers radio feed. Sick.
19:09 Yes! Think last time was 08. I'll have to check the map on midmajority.com. RT @walleye14 @midmajority you guys ever been to murray state
19:10 For the last time, UIC senior guard Robo Kreps is not a Robot. Unfortunately. #someday
19:13 I've been informed that despite all the crankiness, profanity and hateful spew, we now have 2K followers... and it's the 2K Sports Classic.
19:14 I mean, holy shit, right? Free horchata for everybody! [coupon expires Nov 19 at 7:15 pm EST]
19:17 Black-clad UIC takes a quick 4-0 lead, but former Minnesota Golden Gopher Paul Carter assumes two early fouls. It won't matter.
19:18 Daniel Barnes with a UIC #superhoop, and the Flames are up 7-2. Did UIC have flame graphics on their shorts last season? #pantsonfire
19:28 At the end of the first quarter, it's UIC 12, Toledo 6. It is kinda different not seeing Jimmy Collins over there on the sidelines.
19:32 Toledo on a 6-2 burst, have narrowed it to 14-12 at 6:30 mark of 1H. Fast first half so far. Might get some miles in tonight.
19:37 UIC's Robo Kreps with his second #superhoop, but it's under review. 2 points. He tears off his face. HOW DARE YOU QUESTION ME MEAT UNIT
19:43 Anthony Wright with a couple of #superhoop swishes for Toledo. One was from 28 feet out. UIC leads 22-20 at 1:51 1H.
19:44 Wright is the only non-freshman in the starting lineup: 6-6 senior. Big Ten fans might remember him as a Michigan Wolverine.
19:46 Wright's UM bio is still up, and reads: "2007-08: Helped Michigan to a 10-22 record."
19:48 Zavion Neely with a sweet Statue of Liberty layup at the end of the first half, and UIC is back up by five: 27-22.
19:52 I remember when this happened. Absolutely horrifying. http://img.ly/2sVh
19:55 The True Blue Crew has a small but excitable presence here tonight in the end section. They all have stage names, masks, and numbers.
19:57 When Toledo scores 60 points in a game, everybody gets a free small Frosty. Last time they scored 60 at home: 12/10/09. SIXTY.
20:04 Bronze it RT @HustleBelt @midmajority I still have that coupon. I should get it framed.
20:08 We are back. It's the second half of hot MAC-on-Horizon action. UIC by seven.
20:09 Robo Kreps with an offensive foul on a drive. Then he melted the ref with his a death ray that came out of his ass. DIE ANALOG SCUM
20:12 Important disclaimer: half of what I tweet about at games doesn't really happen. You have to guess which half, and that's twice the fun.
20:13 UIC up 30-22, and Toledo hasn't scored yet in five minutes of second half action. And that "ass ray"? Real.
20:17 If Toledo doesn't score for the rest of the game, I promise to write "22 Teams That Can Beat The Toledo Rockets." #TMMthrowbaxx
20:19 And Toledo just scored. It's 33-24 UIC at the 13 minute mark of the second half.
20:22 #sadz RT @Stephen_Hill @midmajority No frosties tonight my friend
20:26 Choose Yr Petition: TOL to lower the Frosty threshold to 50, or the one that makes saying "football score" at 35-28, etc. a federal crime.
20:29 Anthony Wright with a #superhoop, and Toledo breaks 30. He's got quite a bit more of a tummy than he did at Michigan. #frosty
20:35 Pirate? Flamboyant? If so, yes. RT @chicolbball @midmajority Have you ever heard of Captain Juggles? He's not HT entertainment, Under 8.
20:39 6:43 to go here in Toledo, UIC up 43-37. I am so f___ing jonesing for a Frosty right now, you would not believe it.
20:42 I'm so psychodelirious for a cold tasty treat right now, Hoops Nation, it's taken over my brain. I can't think. Can you freeze horchata?
20:49 UIC 49, Toledo 44, 2:38 2H. I will trade you the internal organ of your choice for a Frosty.
20:51 RT @racheldulitz: @midmajority LOL! I was thinking I really could use an extra spleen. Where would you like it delivered?
20:55 Toledo is on the MOVE! One minute left, 52-50 UIC. Does the Frosty contest include overtime, or must it be a regulation game?
20:57 I drove 480 miles just to be here for this! RT @bobmcdonald @midmajority is at Toledo-UIC. Who drew short straw for that game?
21:00 Paul Carter stole the ball for UIC and ran it back for a #softdunk, and that'll be it. 57-51 Flames, it's a final.
21:02 That was some Friday night fun, no? We will be back at you for two tomorrow live from Miami!! IUPUI-home team, and San Diego St-Green Bay.
21:04 That is adorbz. RT @mrericreyes Watching #pixelvision with @ballybasketball and Long Beach State Ballz http://twitpic.com/38cj8o
21:07 But not as adorbz as playing "Mr. Brightside" after losses. I feel so young.
