There is what happened on the court: a current Ohio Valley Conference team, EKU, handily beat a SIUe program that will start play in the league next year. The road team played well in the first half, and then the shots stopped falling, and the superior athleticism of an established Division I program, playing in front of a home crowd, took over.

There's all of that. But there was something else, something that more people will remember than the score. Nobody's going to remember this game for what it was. We've done this before, recasting and inverting basketball reality. This game will go down in history as the night the media table collapsed.


In happier times, or rather the hours before the six-minute mark of the first half, it was a good media table. It was maroon, the same primary spirit color as Eastern Kentucky University chose years ago. It did its job: holding papers, laptops and assorted machines up at a level degree. But there was a buckling, the anguished whine of metal on metal, and the table's angle was suddenly the grade of a ski slope.


Screws popped out.


One problem was anodized aluminum. Nothing should be made out of that.

A member of the facilities staff came over, bent down, surveyed the situation, and went off to gather materials and tools for a fix. There was a rumor that the media table would be fixed by halftime. In the meantime, I supported the table up with my knees and splinted with my laptop bag.

Halftime arrived, and we waited. And waited. Help never arrived. Finally, in the closing minutes of the break, I did what any mid-major website writer would do. I jumped into the breach.


Using my extensive experience as a construction apprentice in New York City between junior and senior years in high school, I located the core problem. The screws had been rubbed loose by the jiggling of the metal flange, which spun around backwards upon detachment. I jammed the works straight, unbended the aluminum slats, and reattached the screws.


My solution also involved slicing my right pinky finger like a flank of ham. It turns out that my blood is the same color as SIU Edwardsville's road uniforms.


It's a good thing I was at a basketball game. The Eastern Kentucky athletic trainer helped me out, and dressed my horrific Category 2 flesh wound!


So it all ended well. And Bally got a band-aid too.

If anybody in the EKU facilities department is reading this, you'll need some longer screws and will have to go in there with a drill. I was able to put together a temporary solution, mostly because as a journalist I don't carry power tools with me. (This, however, may change in the future.)
