Game 7-002: Vermont at Siena
November 16, 2010 1:06 pm ET by Kyle Whelliston

Vermont Catamounts at Siena Saints

November 13, 2010 7:00 pm
Times Union Center
BBState Stats/Recap

There is no place you'd want to be on a Saturday night in November than in the warm, friendly, gracefully aging confines of the Times Union Center in Albany, New York, to watch a college basketball game between the defending champions of the America East and the Metro Atlantic Athletic conferences.

The TUC is not like most MAAC buildings. There's a VIP section!

The evening began with a banner reveal for the homestanding Saints' third consecutive league title. But once play began, Siena showed how much they'd lost by way of graduation. (And their former coach, Fran McCaffery, was spending his Saturday formulating an ultimately doomed game plan for Iowa's game against South Dakota State.) Vermont -- without Marqus "#omgdunx" Blakely -- took advantage of soft interior defense and shot the superhoop well, but the Saints found a burst of energy late in the game to pull close. "It was a great game between two of the best mid-major programs in the Northeast," said Catamounts head coach Mike Lonergan afterwards. "I don't think we're just schools with great momentary teams, we're programs."

The most notable thing about the evening, however, was the failure of the in-arena electronics late in the first half. The overhead scoreboard went out of sync with the ones over the baskets, then the scoreboards were frozen for seven minutes. Stat Crew stopped working, and the nation stopped getting updates of the action. There were glitches in the scoreboard. Fans were confused and disoriented, and began booing and howling.

I know that I am the only college basketball writer in America who is actively warning people about the upcoming Robot takeover. And I know that might make me seem "crazy." I fully realize that when the Robocalypse does arrive, that I will have several minutes of being "right" before the Robots coldly and heartlessly crush me as well, so that proves that my warnings are selfless. I am not in this for the smugness.

After the game, as the fans filed out, "Virtual Insanity" by Jamiroquai played over the Times Union Center public address system. It was a fitting musical bookend for a night when technology escaped human grasp. But consider for a moment: it's been over 15 years since that song was released, and just about none of the lyrics about what the "future's made of" have come true since. Mothers can't choose the color of their babies, and we do not live underground. (Unless you find yourself stuck in SEFCU Arena, of course.) And nobody wears hats like that, ever.

18:37 Game 7-002: Vermont at Siena. Lines! http://img.ly/2qB2
18:38 RT @EdXeno: Season tickets are one beautiful thing. As summer turns to winter, the @midmajority still gives us the heat. http://flic.kr/p/8T41xH
18:46 Times Union Center. Lots of memories in this barn! And Bally's living it up VIP style! http://img.ly/2qBn
18:58 RT @chrispalm: @midmajority Only thing longer then that line is Evan Fjeld's gnarly mustache.
19:07 Banner time. http://img.ly/2qBP
19:13 Rossiter clanked a bunny-hook, got his own rebound, put it back in and one. #toobigyojr 5-2 SIE early.
19:15 Weird looking up at the Vermont lineboard and seeing a #23. It was like, wha? #omgdunx? No. Brian Voelker, Fr., 6-6.
19:21 RT @midmajority360: http://tmm7.me/489 [PHOTO] Butler fans cheer as a banner commemorating their runner-up finish in last year's NCAA to... #BUTL
19:24 Joey Accaoui is your new bicycle. 5-8 dude on Vermont (soph), just drove 25 feet and dropped an and-one layup on Rossiter. 16-15 UVM 12:35.
19:26 me typo RT @chrispalm Check your media guide, Accaoui is a senior. Has a lovely 3 point stroke though, patented that floater last year.
19:29 RT @SethHunt105: This is my first early season tourney since the old Far West Classics in Mem Coliseum. @midmajority, you remember those from your UO days?
19:30 They killed the Far West Classic the year I moved east. Two unrelated developments.
19:32 Rakeen Brookins, one of the new generation of Sienas, drive + dipsy! Saints up 22-16, end of the 1st quarter.
19:34 Oh, and Evan Fjeld's drrtydrrty stache... he looks like he's older than I am, either by age or as a silent movie villain from the 1920s.
19:39 Oddest MTO contest of #S7 so far: Name That Steak. Photo of cow chunk on the screen. For $50, is this a porterhouse, chateaubriand or strip?
19:42 Scoreboards broken, so the PA announcer has to call the score after each hoop. It's making people weird. 26-25 SIE, not 23-18.
19:43 The best part of Name That Steak was that on TUC's aging video board, it looked like a piece of bacon.
19:44 RT @EdXeno: @midmajority Strip steak!
19:46 PA guy forgetting to call the score after baskets, crowd getting belligerent. @ballybasketball, is this another psychological experiment?
19:47 "Vermont 30, Siena 28." "THANK YOU"
19:48 Clock's stopped too. Stuck at 8:55. It's really 2:51. Or 4:43, which is what the Gametracker is saying. #billypilgrim
19:49 We're ROCKING the Slingerlands!!!! RT @NovaYankee Aw man, @midmajority is in my home town. Home-sick for Albany again.
19:50 Really? We've got dead pxls on our side RT @EdXeno Aging video board? Brand new this year. And working wonderfully, obviously...
19:52 The MTO trivia contest in the stands just now: a rerun. Nothing's working. The Robots have begun the rebellion. FOLLOW ME TO FREEDOM
19:58 Headline: ROBOSPLOSION IN ALBANY 2deck: Saints win 3deck: Unless they didn't
20:03 This kind of reminds me of @bbstate last night when 63 games ended at the same time. Killing it today though.
20:08 Halftime. Vermont 35, Siena 31. I think.
20:21 UVM 40, SIE 38, Saint chipping away at what was a substantial UVM lead. Robots are behaving now. There was a dance team lazer megamix tho!
20:24 Fjeld with a baseline spinner (afterwards, a ragtime piano and an ornate interstitial card: "Ha, ha, I confound you!"), UVM back up by 9.
20:30 Brookins block for SIE, ran it up the court, threw it in to Rossiter for a layup +1. Siena down 51-40, trying to keep up with UVM's energy.
20:31 Beach ballz. http://img.ly/2qD2
20:37 #WACsmac RT @KraigW Game 3- Weber State @ Utah State. I've been to more games than @midmajority so far this season. WHERE YOU AT BALLY?
20:39 Carissimo + Accaoui've been great RT @ VermontSports Freshman & reserve guys for UVM are contributing quite a bit. Bench points adding up...
20:41 It's 58-45 Catamounts with 8 minutes left. Home fans very angry, but not quite mid-2000s angry.
20:42 Carissimo with a big 3, 10 pts for the froshhhhh, 62-47 7:10 2H. Asswhompathon.
20:46 There was a lot of irrational exuberance in the polls and on the row tonight, but Siena lost a LOT. They're getting torched tonight.
20:47 RT @VermontSports: Him & Voelkel are legit recruits by Lonergan RT @midmajority Carissimo with a big 3, 10 pts for the froshhhhh, 62-47 7:10 2H. Asswhompathon.
20:48 Accaoui has 15, Fjeld has 19... lots of energy, good mix on offense, Catamounts look young and hungry. They'd eat that steak off the screen.
20:50 UVM shooting 43% from 3, outrebounding SIE 40-26, has 39 bench points. Did I mention Siena's defense is horrible? It is.
20:52 RT @toniogerard: @midmajority Solid road 'W' for #Binghamton over Colgate (62-60) in @AmericaEast @PatriotLeague brouhaha. Bing's Greer Wright w/ 27 pts
20:54 SIE down 10 on ball control alone: just 8 turns. Good hands, like that Brookins stl + layup that cut it to 7 (and one). 3:42 left.
20:56 Quick scan: No RLU's so far. GMU by 13 over HARV earlier, UTPA (GWest) 67-53 over EKU (OVC), DAV and PENN in a real close one down stretch.
20:57 SIE trying to come back with big FCP and an energy burst. Success of comeback will be a function of the longevity of that intensity.
21:01 1:55 in reg, UVM 5-point lead, haven't hit a shot for a few minutes. Apfeld fouls out and goes to the bench with an leg tweak.
21:05 Rossiter weird 10-foot touch shot and one, good! 73-70 UVM, 1:15 left. Saints waking up in the last few minutes here!
21:09 75-72 UVM at :44.1. Siena's outscored Vermont 13-4 in the last three minutes.
21:10 2 UVM FTs/miss on the other end, and now the foul parade beginz. 77-72 Catamounts at :24.5. Siena looked dead in the water, put on a burst.
21:15 Accaoui with two icy cold FT's, and Vermont survives 80-76.
21:18 It took an arena PA system to remind me how FUNKY "Virtual Insanity" is.
21:19 RT @dhm: @midmajority Streamers at the Palestra! http://twitpic.com/36n7g6
21:25 RT @AmericaEast: Huge win for @UVMmbb....the Catamounts just ended the 38-game home winning streak of Siena, which was the second-longest in the nation
