Bullet PointsUpsets! Congratulations to our unexpected champions from last night, as Robert Morris repeated in a sticky NEC final at top-seeded Quinnipiac, and Montana engineered a comeback for the Championship Fortnight ages in the Big Sky. The No. 4-seeded Grizzlies were down by 20 at halftime to No. 1 Weber State, and rode Anthony Johnson's 42 points to a thrilling come-from-behind bid robbery.
Higher seeds were 11-5 on Wednesday. In addition to the title game upsets, SWAC No. 1 Jackson State was sent to the NIT by Grambling State. Great West No. 6 New Jersey Tech moved on to the semifinals, and No. 5 Texas-Pan American beat No. 4 Utah Valley on the Wolverines' own floor.
No title games tonight, so catch your breath. Welcome to the WAC, which will play its quarter slots in Reno. The Southland moves on to semis, the Big West is in its second round, and the SWAC plays out its other two quarterfinals. The MAC gets its final eight on in Cleveland.
There are 16 elimination games today.

Johnson scores 42 to send Griz dancing - A 20-point halftime deficit on the road at the conference's top-seeded team? If you're the Grizzlies, that's no reason to panic. And if you're senior guard Anthony Johnson, that's no problem. Anthony Johnson hit a jumper with 11 seconds left to give Montana only its second lead of the night and cap the comeback to win 66-65 over the Weber State Wildcats and claim the Big Sky Conference Championship and a spot in the NCAA tournament. Johnson had a Big Sky tournament record 42 points, including 34 second-half points. Johnson scored the last 21 points of the game for Montana. The Griz also got help from Will Cherry, who forced a turnover with two seconds left in the game to seal the victory.

Huskies Fight Past Chicago State at GWC Tournament - HBU fought back from a 10-point first half deficit to edge Chicago State in the first round of the Great West Conference Tournament by a score of 80-77on Wednesday evening at the McKay Events Center. Chicago State took a quick 7-2 lead and never trailed in the first half. The Huskies managed to tie the game at 16-16 but a 16-6 run by CSU made it a 10-point game with 3:15 left on the clock. HBU pared that lead down to five, trailing 34-29 at the half. The Huskies turned the ball over 15 times in the first period. The Huskies quickly closed the gap in the second half and the score went back and forth with neither team leading by more than four until there was just 5:33 left in the game and HBU took a 60-55 lead. HBU led by nine after a Fred Hinnenkamp three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining but Chicago State slowly cut in to the lead, turning an eight-point HBU advantage with 38 seconds to go in to a one-point game with seven seconds left. Hinnenkamp got a layup with four second left to ice the game for the Huskies.

Defense Carries the Day for NJIT at Great West Tournament - NJIT relied on what has been a foolproof formula to win its first game in the 2010 Great West Conference Tournament, defeating North Dakota, 70-57, at the UVU Events Center Wednesday night on the campus of Utah Valley University. The foolproof formula? Hold the opposition under 60 points. With Wednesday's win against North Dakota, the Highlanders are 9-0 when they keep the opponents at 59, or less. They have 10 wins overall. NJIT, which split its two regular season games with North Dakota (lost at North Dakota, 90-78, on February 23; won at home, 91-73, on February 28), trailed at the half Wednesday night, 28-27.

Tigers Topple Tournament Top Seed, Advance in SWAC Tourney - -It's early March but the madness has already begun as the 8th-seed Grambling State Tigers toppled the top-seeded Tigers of Jackson State, 65-57, in the 2010 Farmers Insurance SWAC Basketball Tournament and became the first 8th-seeded men's team to beat the #1 seed in the SWAC Tournament since Alcorn State beat Mississippi Valley State 67-66 in 2004. In the first half it was the G-Men that controlled the game and the tempo opening up an 8-3 lead with just over five minutes to play. Jackson closed within two before GSU was able to open a 13 point lead at 24-11, however, JSU would scratch back to tie the game at 28 at the half. Grambling shot 32-percent from the field while, holding Jackson to only 25-percent from the floor. The Jackson Tigers held the rebounding edge 24-20. In the second half Jackson jumped ahead 31-28 to begin the period and began what would turn into an epic battle as the teams went through two ties and four lead changes. Tied at 43 Grambling would move ahead for good on a three-point shot by Donald Qualls with 8:02 remaining. Jackson would come no closer than one down the stretch as Grambling held on for the win.

Men's Hoops to Host Idaho in Thursday's WAC Tournament Quarterfinal - Coming off a 79-68 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday, the Nevada Wolf Pack (19-11, 11-5 WAC) returns to action in the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament this week at Lawlor Events Center. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Nevada will take on the seventh-seeded Idaho Vandals (15-15, 6-10) in the quarterfinals on Thursday night. Thursday's game will tip off at 6 p.m. Pacific Time and can be heard live on Nevada's flagship radio station, ESPN 630 AM, with Ryan Radtke and former Wolf Pack head coach Len Stevens calling the action. The Wolf Pack has won its last two games and six of its last eight overall and finished tied for second in the WAC standings with an 11-5 conference mark. Nevada has turned in a 14-1 record at Lawlor Events Center this season and brings a six-game home winning streak into WAC Tournament play. With a victory over the Vandals, the Wolf Pack would win its quarterfinals game in the WAC Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons and turn in the program's seventh consecutive 20-win season.
