  • Ten of 12 higher seeds won on the first evening of Championship Fortnight. The Big South semifinals will feature the four top teams in that league, and seeds Nos. 3 through 5 are through to the Horizon League second round.
  • In the OVC quarterfinals, No. 6 Tennessee Tech upset No. 3 Austin Peay 68-65 on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Kevin Murphy.

  • There was a minor upset in the Horizon, as No. 7 Detroit beat No. 6 Valparaiso on the road.
  • Two more tourneys get started on this Wednesday: the Patriot League quarters at campus sites, and the first two Atlantic Sun quarterfinals take place in Macon, Ga.

Men's Hoops Defeats VMI 82-73 in Big South Quarterfinal Matchup - Despite a furious second-half VMI comeback, Coastal Carolina University pulled off an 82-73 win in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Advance Auto Parts Men's Basketball Championship, Tuesday, March 2. Coastal Carolina, the No. 1 seed, advances to the Semifinals for the first time since the 2005-06 season and will play No. 4 UNC Asheville Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. live on ESPNU. The Chanticleers started the game with a 14-2 run over the first five minutes, spurred by senior Logan Johnson's eight points, including a pair of three pointers and a crowd-pleasing dunk. After several exchanges of baskets, Keydet freshman Stan Okoye hit two straight jumpers to pull the game within eight at 23-15 with 7:59 left in the first. However back-to-back lay-ups by redshirt-junior Chad Gray and Johnson started another 10-2 Chanticleer run, giving the Chanticleers a 33-17 advantage with 4:33 remaining the half. VMI chipped away at the lead, cutting it down to 11 at 36-25 late in the first, but a pair of Johnson three-pointers helped the Chants to a 44-29 lead at the intermission.(via Coastal Carolina)

Bulldogs Advance to Semifinals With 84-73 Victory Over High Point - J.P. Primm scored 23 points and dished out 11 assists as fourth-seeded UNC Asheville defeated fifth-seeded High Point 84-73 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference men's basketball championship at Justice Center Tuesday night. The win moves the Bulldogs (15-15) to the semifinals of the tournament against top-seeded Coastal Carolina Thursday night at Kimbel Arena in Conway. S.C. Highlanders Survive CSU 64-61 in Overtime, Advance to Big South Semifinals - Art Parakhouski (Minsk, Belarus) scored 24 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made the game-clinching free throw with five seconds left to lift Radford to a 64-61 overtime win over Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals of the Big South tournament on Tuesday night at the Dedmon Center. Charleston Southern forced overtime for the second straight meeting between the two teams, outscoring Radford 10-2 in the final 5:10 of regulation. Radford scored the first six points of overtime before the Buccaneers (13-17) hit two straight baskets to force back-and-forth play the rest of the way. Jamarco Warren's jumper with 30 seconds left made it a 63-61 game, but on Charleston Southern's next possession Jeremy Sexton's layup was short to set up Parakhouski's free throw, sealing the win for Radford. Middleton Leads Winthrop Past Liberty In Big South Quarterfinals With Career-High 26 Points (3-2-10) - Reggie Middleton scored a career-high 26 points to lead No. 3 seeded Winthrop to a 80-72 win over No. 6 Liberty in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Championship played Tuesday, March 2, at the Winthrop Coliseum. Winthrop (17-13), which has won eight of the past 11 Big South championships, advances to the Semifinals and will play No. 2 seed Radford on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. at Kimbel Arena in Conway, SC. Vikings Top Loyola, 80-66 In Horizon League Championship First Round - Norris Cole scored 15 points and handed out a career-high 11 assists for his third career double-double and the Viking defense held the Ramblers to 33-percent shooting as Cleveland State upended Loyola, 80-66, in the opening round of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship. The Vikings, who entered the game as the No. 5 seed, improved to 16-16 on the year while Loyola, the No. 8 seed, ends the year with a 14-16 mark. Titans Power Their Way Past Valparaiso In First Round Of HL Tournament - Four players scored in double figures and the Titans shot 56 percent en route to an 89-82 victory at Valparaiso in the first round of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship. It was Detroit's fourth straight victory, third straight on the road, and first win in conference tournament action since 2006. Sophomore Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond) was named the U.S. Army Player of the game with a career-high 21 points and 15 rebounds, his 10th double-double of the season. Sophomore Chase Simon (Detroit, MI/Community) added 24 points and senior Eulis Stephens (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) netted a season-high 11 markers. Junior Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Green Bay Ousts Youngstown State, 81-67, in Horizon League Tournament - The Green Bay Phoenix (21-11) moved on to the second round of the 2010 Speedway Horizon League Championship by virtue of a 81-67 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins (8-22) Tuesday night at the Resch Center. Green Bay is now one win shy of equaling its win total from a year ago. Green Bay used a 10-0 run in 2 ½ minutes midway through the second half to turn a close game into a double-digit win. The Phoenix, which led 48-46 with 10 minutes remaining, received consecutive 3-pointers by Troy Cotton (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Bryquis Perine (Milwaukee, Wis.) to start the rally. Panther Bench, Freshmen Come Through In League Tourney Win - Four players scored in double figures as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee advanced to the second round of the Speedway Horizon League Men's Basketball Championship with a gutsy 73-67 win over UIC Tuesday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The Panthers (19-13) survived in spite of playing long stretches of the second half without all-league senior Ricky Franklin. Men's Basketball Advances To OVC Tournament Semifinals With Win Over Jacksonville State - The Morehead State men's basketball team soared to victory, 87-54, over the No.7 seeded Gamecocks of Jacksonville State in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in Johnson Arena Tuesday night. The Eagles advance to the OVC tourney semifinals in "Music City" Nashville, Tenn., against No. 6 Tennessee Tech, an upset winner over third-seeded Austin Peay. Tip-off will be 9 p.m. EST. Morehead State improved its record to 22-9 and also extended its home winning streak against conference teams to 19. The 22 wins is the second most in school history. (via Morehead State)

Men's Basketball Nashville Bound - Eastern Illinois is headed to Nashville for the Ohio Valley Conference semifinals for the first time since the 2001 season following a 68-61 win over Eastern Kentucky in the opening round of the OVC Tournament played Tuesday night at Lantz Arena. The Panthers improved to 19-11 overall while the Colonels dropped to 20-12. Top-seeded Lehigh hosts Army on Wednesday - 2010 Patriot League regular season champion Lehigh opens postseason play on Wednesday evening as the top-seeded Mountain Hawks play host to No. 8 Army at Stabler Arena in the quarterfinal round of the Patriot League Tournament. Lehigh won both of its games last week, including an entertaining 91-80 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday. 2010 Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year C.J. McCollum netted 28 points in the win, while senior captain Marquis Hall scored a season best 25 points, while handing out a career-high 12 assists. Army has dropped two straight, including a 62-51 loss to Bucknell at home this past weekend. Bucknell, Holy Cross Meet Again in Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament - For the 13th time in 20 Patriot League Tournaments, and for the eighth time in the last nine years, Bucknell and Holy Cross will square off in the postseason in Wednesday night's quarterfinal game at Sojka Pavilion. The 7 p.m. game has been selected for broadcast on CBS College Sports Network. Winners of eight of their last 10 games, the Bison have earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament with a 9-5 record. The Crusaders, who have lost 4 of 5 coming in, finished 5-9 in league play and are seeded No. 7. When the two teams met in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals last season, the seeds were reversed, and Holy Cross came away with a 75-56 victory at the Hart Center. (via Bucknell)

Quarterfinals on LSN - Lafayette enters the Patriot League Tournament as a No. 3 seed and hosts No. 6 seed Colgate on Wednesday, the Leopards' first home Patriot League Tournament game since 2000. Lafayette has never lost a Patriot League Tournament game at home, going 4-0. The winner of Wednesday's game will move on to the semifinal round on Sunday to face the winner of No. 2 Bucknell and No. 7 Holy Cross. The Leopards are coming off a 78-60 loss at American on Saturday while Colgate beat Navy 85-73.
