Bullet Points
- Here we go again: it's Championship Fortnight. Three leagues kick off with campus-site first rounds: the Horizon League, Ohio Valley, and Big South.
- There are 12 games on tap this evening.
On Tap TonightBig South
Radford will begin its quest for its first championship since 1998 (which so happens to be the season before the Big South's
Winthrop era began) against
High Point, which hasn't been seeded this low since 2003. Winthrop, a school with a history of bucking the odds and making the Dance, will begin its conference tourney title defense on the road in a rematch of 2008's title game. Newest member
Gardner-Webb, the addition of which caused one school (Charleston Southern) to be left at home, received the same seed number that it did last season in the A-Sun, and the Runnin' Bulldogs will play at
Liberty on a court where they won just under a month ago. And as a reward for
VMI's best season in three decades, the Keydets will face a dangerous No. 7 seed in
Coastal Carolina, a team that beat them by two points on aggregate in the season series.

Horizon League

The top two seeds, Butler and Green Bay, receive byes all the way to the semifinals (held on Butler's home court) while the low seeds sort themselves out. All higher seeds tonight swept season series with their first-round partners, so the evening shouldn't yield any major surprises. But this could be the last stand for a couple of once-proud seasons. Loyola made an early statement by destroying Georgia in the NIT Season Tip-Off, then later put a dent in Butler's record. UIC beat Vanderbilt and Missouri Valley No. 1 seed Northern Iowa in an impressive 7-3 nonconference start, but the defense collapsed once the calendar turned.

Ohio Valley

Tennessee-Martin, behind national second-leading scorer and future NBA pick Lester "Done Ruthless" Hudson, won its first OVC regular-season championship. The Skyhawks are considerably more than Hudson, however; Marquis Weddle, who scored 30 in the title clincher against Morehead State, is a great scoring foil and makes this team an intriguing low-seed upset possibility if it can survive three games on its own home court. Lurking behind is Austin Peay, double-titlists of 2008, which dug out of a late January swoon to capture the No. 2 seed. Tennessee State, which fired coach Cy Alexander in mid-season, received the same No. 6 seed as last year... remember that the Tigers struck all the way to the title game. Eastern Illinois looked to be a strong contender for a high seed with an 8-4 start, but six straight OVC losses doomed the Panthers to another steep tourney challenge.
