Tourney Central 3/7/2008 (Day 4)
Bullet Points
- There was an upset in the Atlantic Sun quarters, as No. 6 Gardner-Webb routed No. 3 Stetson.
- The Big South final is set: UNC Asheville and Winthrop, the league's top two seeds. The game will be played Saturday.
- In the MVC first round, No. 8 Indiana State and No. 7 Missouri State advanced to play top seeds Drake and Illinois State, respectively.
- The Northeast Conference quarters went as planned; all four top seeds advanced.
- It's First Round Friday -- or "Pillowfight Friday," if you prefer -- in several leagues tonight. These leagues will hold play-in games while their top seeds look on: the CAA, Metro Atlantic, the SoCon, America East and WCC.
- The Atlantic Sun and Ohio Valley semifinals play out tonight, in advance of championship games tomorrow. The Missouri Valley continues with a quarterfinal round in St. Louis, and the Horizon League will hold its second round at Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Atlantic Sun

Gardner-Webb trailed by 11 with 4:34 remaining in the first half, but went on to score 54 points in the second to run away with the upset win. Lipscomb, the host school, played from behind the entire game and their comeback fell short against ETSU. No host has won this tournament since 2001 (Georgia State).

No. 6 Tennessee State is a dangerous seed indeed, having topped tonight's semifinal opponent within the past month. Austin Peay will need to find a way to stop UTM's Lester Hudson, just recently named OVC Player of the Year.

Tonight's 1-4 semifinal is a rematch of last year's final, when the No. 2 seeded Bruins flattened ETSU on the way to the championship. The other semifinal is the Artis Gilmore Classic; the 7-2 legend played for both schools back in the Seventies.

It's the second round in the HL. North Side (Loyola) versus South Side (UIC) -- who you got, Chicago? The 3-6 game features a rematch of last weekend's ESPN2 game at Valpo that sent Wright into No. 2 seed position after spending most of the year in second place.

Today's quarterfinal game schedule will be severely altered if Bradley and Creighton relive their double-overtime classic from last weekend. Drake and Illinois State will play weary low seeds, while Southern Illinois will continue its push to an automatic bid that seemed impossibly far away just two months ago.

This day is always for the diehards, a full day of scrappy hoops that always produces a surprise or two. Watch out for Georgia State, a team that's been known to amp up its energy on this day and produce a low-seed run. GSU beat W&M last year in the 8-9 game.

The games played tonight are two levels removed from the top seeds in a bracket structure vaguely reminiscent of Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Tonight's Glass Joes will battle it out in the Minor Circuit for a spot in the World Circuit this weekend, and are more than likely not to get their Dream Fight in the 2008 NCAA's.
