American survived the defending champions with a three-point play with 17 seconds left. Colgate built a big lead before a furious Leopard rally nearly forced a third upset of the night.

In the first day of quarterfinals, the top two seeds didn't exactly cruise, but they did enough to advance. Belmont and Jacksonville will now get a day off while the other two quarters play out (see below).

Troy outscored ULL 44-25 in the second half to bring Lafayette's season to an unexpected halt. Incidentally, Troy's women's team won an 11-over-6 road game at Louisiana-Monroe on the same night. The other four first-round games went as planned, and the Belt has now been tightened to an elite eight which will reconvene Sunday in Mobile.
