The Boubacar 11/27/2007 (STEFF-in Edition)WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The leftovers are already running out in your fridge, but they're always stocked up here at the Bread Restaurant. Personally, I recommend the cinnamon crunch bagel with hazelnut cream cheese, and perhaps a veggie grilled panini sandwich later. I'd better finish this Boubacar up before the lunch rush starts. "Houston Fancher, your order's ready at the counter. Houston?"
I almost forgot, Curry had six boards too, the same amount that Sander did. Watching him, it's easy to forget that this guy is a sophomore. I had to put it in my notes twice and circle it and underline it -- he's only played a little over one year of college ball. He's one of those rare players who runs the floor like he owns it, a two-guard confident enough to shout directions and make coded hand-signals to teammates. He's one of the few who can stand in the deep corner, nodding his head and casting looks into the crowd while a play's going on, then snap into focus and run a picture-perfect stutter-step route that ends in a perfect drilled three from elbow extended. People say "he's a joy to watch" about a lot of ballplayers, but Curry is the kind of player that leaves you with a big, goofy smile for hours after the final buzzer. But a mystery remains: Davidson's game notes have Curry listed as 6-3 now, up from 6-flat last year. Was this really a growth spurt, or did he gain three inches' worth of reputation over the summer?
Kyle Cruze, a senior guard for Cross who's been a favorite around here for reasons beyond his name, won it with a buzzer-beating shot, and the Patriot League favorites are a perfect nickel-and-oh so far (it appears that Jim Calhoun's fears were indeed founded). But even without Jerome Tillman, who was out for medical precautionary reasons, Ohio (2-1) led for most of the first half and held them close on the boards. Also, a special Boubacar Bobcat bump for Justin Orr, who was a key starter for Murray State two years ago when the Racers made their NCAA run but transferred out when the regime changed. He shot 7-for-10 last night on the way to an Ohio-high 18 points, and the 6-6'er has shot 60 percent on the season. He's the midsize scoring support the Bobcats were missing last year, and he'll be a key factor in the MAC race.
What we don't have is an actual boxscore -- no wire service carried it, no outlet posted it, and don't even try to rely on the Prairie View website for it. Of the 952 completed contests so far this season, there is one gigantic gaping hole in my database, and it is this game, control number #80603. Someone had to have taken stats, right? This is Division I, right? Aren't there NCAA rules about this? We've done this whole SWAC sports information thing to death in the past week, we won't go there again. But we need this boxscore in the name of completism, and we're putting out an open call for it. UPDATE: The boxscore was on the SWAC's official site, and it's an unmitigated disaster. 300 minutes per side? [Thanks, Josh...] |

"He's unbelievable," said 6-8 senior Thomas Sander after the Wildcats'
